Btw earlier posts about the TDS-5 , they are visually close to a PMB yes, but apparently not the same, pleated versus non pleated, tensioned vs non-tensioned something to that effect.

Dynamic driver, slightly larger than a standar 40mm driver. Material is teflon (?) But for some reason, the middle is paper?

You might be able to play around with the hole  pattern on the front of the baffle just in front of the driver ( or possibly remove it see what happens ), that'll be what is giving you it's current tuning. Depending on what the driver sounds like without that of course.

The hell?? Are you SURE that's an MDR-V7 driver? It's supposed to be a 50mm evaporated sapphire driver. Wrong size AND wrong material seems a bit far fetched... especially when the specs come straight from Sony.

yeah I have had 3 pairs of the things over time.

And know one other person also who has them too. And measured each with a ruler.  the misconception has been corrected a couple times in various posts but people believe what they want I guess. Heck I saw that corrected then one or two posts later completely ignored again like it didn't even exist, the oddest thing.
 
Specs  from Sony? Both my box front and a pic of the actual box rear says otherwise.
I have seen other box fronts in photos also, no difference.

The Sony CD777 are evaporated Sapphire but only 40mm,  Sony CD999 evaporated Diamond ones are yes 50mm, and it is quite obvious difference right away when looking at them.
Perhaps the V700 had a 50mm.
 
the V7 baffle itself does not fit and cannot properly fit a 50mm , you know the round clip that holds this driver in place , opening, and venting  show no sign of modification  in any of them
 
Of course it still doesn't change how they sound

Those are the drivers in all the old "Audatron" branded headphones. Looks like Koss was the one who did the OEMing for Wal-Mart, not Fostex.
 
These drivers are quite good in the right implementation as well. I've made two headphones with these drivers using a Bang & Olufsen U70 frame and one stock damping disc in the cups. I gave them away both times, for a christmas/birthday present respectively, but for the period that I had them I couldn't help but feel like there was something "special" about the sound. I remember the soundstage being particularly fantastic.
