  Elektronika TDS-5M (Електроникa ТДС-5)
The export version of the TDS-5.
~55mm

Good drivers, these ones. Peerless MB 55mm pleated orthodynamic dipoles, used in the TDS-5M, B&O U70, Magnat RT-10, and several others. Sound great in an open implementation. This is the 57-hole version, there are different ones with larger, less plentiful holes in the magnets, but the diaphragm is the same for all of them. High max input, nice midrange, extension is slightly lacking but overall very nice sounding in the right implementation.

Agreed. The PMB 55mm sounds very natural, and I find no particular fault in the low or high range extension in a fully open back configuration (that did take several attempts to achieve though, it's hard to get it right).

I am not sure the Soviet drivers were PMB made. Possibly based upon, but far as I know the Electronika TDS-5/5M drivers were all made in certain Soviet factories.  Did they make and export for PMB? Possibly.

That's a pretty damn good clone if they're just "based upon" them... I have one in my hands right now. They're literally completely identical visually.

Maybe they were the OEM for PMB? I'm used to all the old soviet stuff coming from dedicated factories behind the iron curtain, using the gov't dictated model numbers. I doubt they would have outsourced that. Amfiton and Echo I know for sure, those I forget.
The 5M was their export version of the time, so yeah  could have exported the drivers as well en masse to others.
But who knows.
I'll ask some sources very close to the source if I remember to do so.

50mm Sony CD780 drivers (+ smaller generic chinese 40mm driver for size comparison - you find these in a lot of gaming headsets, AKG K518 etc)

Driver is glued into the locking-grill-frame thingy. Can't really take better photos than this.

Just a single punched hole in the rear vent.
Tempted to poke another hole or two to get more bass, but it's not the normal kind of cheap thin paper material, kinda fancy and feels velvety.

I prefer avoiding destructive modification as much as possible.
Seems a waste to punch holes since it might not even sound good.
Don't mind doing this with cheap chinese drivers or no-name OEM stuff since they have relatively small value, or Grados since at least they're still in production.

Sony MDR-XD100

I destroyed them because I had two pairs of the XD100 and one broke. I kept the drivers but couldn't find a use for them. They're an odd outer diameter and shape. They're also too deep, I wanted to swap them with the Solo HD but the didn't fit :D

I also have Sennheiser PXC250, AKG K404, AKG K142HD, Solo HD and Siberia V2 and maybe some old Plantronics, too, if you guys are interested.

CD780 is a Vectran blended bio-cellulose isn't it.

No. You only get those in the higher end (CD1000+) models. The CD780 is just a bog standard 50mm mylar diaphragm.

Well... 50mm diaphragms aren't exactly 'bog standard' but I get your meaning ^_^
The vent material has a very unusually luxurious synthetic feel to them. Any idea what they're made of?
