The Fiio X5 Thread

While it may be possible to change the way certain hardware behaves with FW, there have been previous posts from FiiO (Joe I think) stating no changes to sound have been made.

They'd need to officially confirm, but I'm guessing that no mention in the changelog should mean that we're just hearing differently because we're focussed on changes due to new FW. In other words, your brain may be "creating" differences because you're listening to see if any exist.

Yes... we happily accept optical illusions, but will swear black is white when it comes to auditory illusions...

C'mon, I am perfectly willing to accept the possibility of expectation bias and the placebo effect, but the above is completely overstated. There is some irony there for sure.

To make sure all your files work, you should use .m3u8. This will make sure that filenames with letters suck as ø, œ, û, á, etcetera, will be read correctly.

Using foobar will certainly reduce the time you'll need to create a playlist

Good to know about .m3u8. Thank you!

Just in case you want to use the X5 as transport... the Ifi idsd micro is fantastic with the X5 and so far every head phone I've thrown at it... including IEM's as the idsd micro has built in IEM comp built in...  tons and tons of power...    not a pocket solution but still a portable solution
when you don't want to carry or mess with a computer/laptop...   the coax output of the X5 is perfect for this setup..

I upgraded to FW 2.2 just to test if the sound changes, and to me the sound did change, it didn't sound as great as FW 2.0, back to 2.0. My setup is X5+E12+UM Merlin.

I upgraded to fw 2.2 also, and did not notice any change, same great sound through my UMmodTF10+1. I am still, however, having trouble getting to the page where I can choose which card I want to select. It doesn't always work the same way, it seems. Say I am playing a particular piece and I press the upper right button for 3 seconds. Sometimes I get the card page, but sometimes it just brings me back to the page where I selected the current selection. If I repeat it often enough, I can finally get it to the card page. Anybody else find this to be true?

Does this sound signature change only on headphone out, or also line out?

I have no way of telling, as i just upgraded the buffers in my E12DIY! And never use headphone out.

Also don't feel like downgrading, as it sounds fine to me.

I have not tried the headphone-out. I hear always the line-out. In this case with ALO PanAm and Audeze LCD-2. With my E12DIY and the AKG K3003 i have not testet it.

Looking to buy some decent quality ones and haven't a clue.

Kind thanks

For line out, i use the cable that came with the HS-6 kit.

for coax, just a regular cable. It's digital, and i doubt there's much loss.
