The Fiio X5 Thread

I just think it's a cop-out, personally. Sorry, but I do.

It seems this is more about trying to compete with Apple, by making the X5 as 'slim&sexy' as possible, at the expense of actual performance-vs-battery life.

Well, slim&sexy does not make a flagship device.

Performance makes a flagship device, with all other factors being secondary to that. If I want to buy a device that needs a seperate amp to perform at flagship level, then I fail to see what the X5 brings to the table that isn't already available.

How do you know the X5 is supposed to be the flagship device? Maybe FiiO plans quite a line of devices. Maybe they're planning a juicier one down the road.
Besides, how do you know the market of power-hungry maniacs is all that big? I know I want to drive some orthos, but then you don't see me considering the E12. No, I'm looking at some balanced boutique DAC/amps. Maniacs are hard to please, you know.
Meanwhile, X5 makes total sense for those wanting better clarity and bigger storage than the X5 and rocking a reasonable choice of 'phones to use on the go. It also makes sense to some maniacs who might like its build, its features, its format support and kinda content with its price.

Y not ask centrance to support coaxial in? There r already zillions configuration in the m8lx already...

Btw,even the E17 can support optical/coaxial/aux/usb inputs....

What do you mean, "even the E17"? FiiO products are well-known for their great set of features.

Of course we'll nag CEntrance some more. It's just that they obviously won't consider designing additional configurations before at least sorting out their preorder queue. And we thought that what with various X3 delays maybe the X5 design wasn't finalized yet. Turns out it was, and it's totally understandable FiiO won't change it now.
And, yes, I agree that coaxial makes more sense on the go anyway, so let's hope CEntrance adds it in the future.

Maybe FiiO the X5 will have USB-Audio. James even mentioned they could work OTG inside the X3.

If Fiio X3 will have USB OTG in the future, I am getting one X3 right away (I can use a self-powered hard drive with X3).

James, would you please confirm it?

To me, The special selling point of DX50 is its USB OTG function, but I would rather go with Fiio X3 if it also has it.

I was merely saying that E17 is 1/4 the size of M8 and can support various inputs...and costs 1/3 the price...

Um, because there's certain DACs that accept TOSLINK only? Have you read the thread?
We know TOSLINK might not be perfect for portable use, but sometimes it's the only option you have.

So uh, use other DAC? the one that accept coax?

If you REALLY want to use that DAC then why not buy DAP which that particular DAC designed for to begin with? You're using an external DAC, it doesn't matter what DAP you're using in the end.

But oh well, carry on people.

James,

Could you give us a little bit information about X5? I am not asking or demanding anything, I am just curious about what would be the differeces between these 2 DAPs.

PS: Guys I do realize this is X3 thread but there is no X5 thread. I suppose a little question also related to X3 is okay to stay here.

Still there's a poll about a "successor" at the top of this very thread. Or is it supposed to be just a next gen, not a one up?
Somehow I just don't see FiiO getting one last DAP out of the door and calling it a day.

so far X5 will be our flagship DAP on our Roadmap, we are considering what should be the next, a cheaper DAP ,X1 for $100, or an expensive DAP, X7 for $600 or $800. but it is not the work to us in 2013.

As I known, the power output is not the only specification which should be included in a flagship DAP, for example, there are some models which price is $1000 or $1300 , and still have less power output vs our X3.

I am not try to compare with others, what I means power is noting. even we increase the power output to 300mw@32ohms in X5, audiophile still like to buy an amp to drive some big cans, or just to change the

sound from warm to transparence.

Anyway, it is easy to us to increase the output power but we need to listening more people, we are not magician so we have to balance the power vs battery life and the heat.

Noooooo. I was certain that I was only going to buy the X3 but now I'm pretty certain that I'll be adding the X5 to my DAP collection, too. Don't make me buy another one (or even two).

we have a flagship portable DAP/AMP which support both coaxial/optical and usb , line input . so X3/X5 should have not problem.
