The SD card slot in the case: get rid of it. Looks like a funnel for dust and pocket debris.

Same for me here!
Listening the X3 with my Grado totally blows the Fuze+ away.

I could hear some distortion with the Fuze+ which disappeared with the X3. Sound stage, Dynamic... Everything's there!
I set the Bass to -2 and Trebble to +4 (originally used the Jazz EQ settings on the Fuze+, which was the best possible sound...).

A real winner (at this price tag).

I have the Sansa Fuze+ (rockboxed) and I recently received the X3 as well. Well well, what can I say? The X3 totally blows the Sansa Fuze out of the water. When listening to Adele's Skyfall in 24bit FLAC through the headphone out with my Sony XBA3, I notice the hissing on the Fuze is so much more noticeable than the X3. The X3 was just silent even at the highest volume and with the headphone gain on high. The headphone amp in the Fuze sounds like it struggles to keep the bass and highs in control where as the X3 handles them flawlessly. The X3 sounds perfect with its Bass and Treble set to 0 whereas the Fuze requires some tweaking to get the sound closer to decent (by doing this, it does sound a lot more unnatural). That's my 2 cents... hope this helps.

Alright!

Thanks both of you for your impressions.
So minimal hissing at high gain, storage expansion, mechanical buttons and good SQ? Count me in!

The X3 does not use mechanical buttons. From the pics of the insides I've seen. They are membrane based.

I've never heard of a portable unit using mechanical buttons.

Storage I have a 64GB card. Was easy to format to FAT32. Some things I think could have been better for Eg. A dedicated Tactile Volume control would have been great. The X3 has multifunction Volume control (also serves as directional keys when browsing through songs or changing sound settings) This means that you have to exit out of the menu several times so that you can go back to control the volume again. I also found it a bit hard to operate the volume / skip tracks in the dark (would have been great if the layout of the keys were a bit more intuitive instead of the diagonal layout (I will do doubt get used to it with time and experience with this device). Anyway at this price point, I really can't complain about these small issues. The sound quality alone is enough to justify purchasing one of these! Have fun with it once you get it buddy!

I'm guessing he means mechanical (membrane is also mechanical) as opposed to touch sensor type (Fuze+ type or ipod style keys).

A membrane switch is not mechanical. It is held together mechanically for the X3. But the switch itself is membrane, which isn't mechanical.

Just generalizing things, as in I'm touching something physical and I could click on it. Perhaps physical buttons would be more appropriate.

No need to prolong this debate

X3 did use mechanical buttons,

but the buttons are not directly connect to the key buttons.  it can make you feel more soft and smooth. most cell phone used such design.

Hi James
I use X3 now and its sound is very good.
However, there are some inconvenient points.
I am poor at english, so I hope your generosity.

1. Jump to the next scroll page in track list.

2.Choose back button's function- former page or upper root

3. In folder browser, support gapless/ shorten delay when manually skip track.

4. If one folder's play is over, jump to the next folder automatically.

5. Support all languages in track list- irrelevant with selected language.

Thank you for reading and have a nice day!
