The Fiio X3 Thread.

Hello everyone,

I have been trying to upgrade to the latest version of the FW 2.1, I just keep getting a message saying that the file cant be found.

This is what I did.....

Downloaded file from Fiio
Extracted file to my documents
Send to SD Card
Press the two buttons on X3 to try and initialise the transfer....this is when I get the message thatthe file cant be found, although the file is on the SD card.

The SD card is a 64gb SanDisc class 10, formatted to fat 32........there is approx 20 albums on the SD card in flac......is it absolutely necessary to have a bland SD card?

Chris....

Chris put the .fw file on the SD card then hold the 2 single buttons

So is $139 shipped a no-brainer?

Sorry to say mate, but when updating the firmware, the Micro SD card must have ONLY the x3.fw file on it, nothing else. I know, it sucks, I went through the same thing of moving my music around. Hope it works! :)

Not true for me, have updated from first to last FW upgrade (2.1) with my 64 GB microSD which has barely enough storage space left to copy the FW file on it.
Never had any trouble updating so far.

I'm with you, I use only “Browse Files”, no "Play All", no "Favorites", no "Category".

Same here, browse by folder all the way, the other options are nearly useless in their current implementation.
Play all can be left out as far as I am concerned. With a fully loaded 64 GB card and full internal memory (mostly mp3) the player goes into anaphylactic shock if you try this option.
You can go cook diner and eat it too before the player starts playing.

Just picked up the Fiio X3 for $139 shipping from Adorama. I have been wanting to replace my Zune HD. To be honest, I don't listen to portable music that often but when I do, I don't want to drain the battery on my phone. This is a small-ish barrier to entry.

Did the same thing - I can end up at 20% battery by the end of the day on my iPhone 5 - if I use it to listen to music, I run the risk of shutdown - I like the idea of a separate unit for tunes - couple that with a $200 pair of UE900's - that is a decent setup for under $340.00.

X3 owner and have been following this thread from day one ...recommended by Fiio to use empty sd card with fw file but i have been updating fw with my music in it because I dont have a spare sd card . So far some have problem updating even with empty sd card as recommended but have always updated fw with music as razorblade with barely enough storage space.

Also other aspect of usage of X3 has the same symptoms ...some do develops problem and some dont ...not too sure why ...obviously some bugs need to be fix

Chris....

I had a little trouble with this firmware update as well, no trouble with any of the previous ones, but i finally got it. Make sure that the only thing on the card from the download is the firmware update file only, plus whatever music files are already on there because yes, you can have music files on the card and still do a firmware update. What I'm talking about is the other things that come on the firmware download like the USB DAC stuff. I think there are five different things in total in the zip file. Unzip the file and transfer only the firmware upgrade to your card which should be the last of the five things on the list. That should work.

I too use Browse Files only now that , that option supports gapless playback. I have no use for any of the other playback methods. I am wondering if this may be another one of those cultural things. James mentioned earlier in this thread, God that seems like years ago now doesn't it, that Chinese consumers had little or no need for gapless playback. I never really did get a satisfactory explanation as to why this was. No explanation of any kind at all actually. Perhaps the Play All being at the top of the menu is another one of these cultural discrepancies.

A poll of sorts: I wrote to FiiO:
"“Browse Files” should be the 1st menu item, not the 5th, since it is used every time one wants to change albums. (“Play All” should be at the bottom -- who ever wants to play everything on the player?!?)"
They replied that as far as they know the current menu does reflect user preferences:
"Regarding to the suggestion that “Browse Files” should be the 1st menu item, not the 5th and “Play All” should be at the bottom, kindly inform you that, it is a problem related to the personal habit. Many of our customers are satisfy with the UI."
So I'm curious if most folks indeed use play-all more than browse-files, as well as the other items that are listed above browse-files in the list.
If I'm in the minority, no prob, but it seems wacky to me....

I don't own the X3 (it's on the way

). But when I use the music app on my phone, I rarely use "Browse files", mostly "Play all" and "Artist". I guess you have way more songs than mine, I only have 300-ish so "Play all" works out pretty well for me. Also, Fiio is in the Chinese market, which has a bunch of illegal downloads so the music files usually don't have the correct Album tag, and there are no Album folders at all

I think my collection is about 500, and I've always used Albums to choose my songs. Mind you I have to manually edit the tag data myself, but it's worth it, especially if you have albums with multiple artists.

Plus I think you're gonna love the X3! I know I do! :D
