The Deals DISCUSSION Thread (READ THE FIRST POST!!!)

LOL... I thought they were cheesy looking when they first came out!

I always liked the look of the HD580 a lot better. Even though the plastic grille on these was supposedly bettered by the metal grilles of the 600 and 650, I always thought they looked really neat.

And even the font that said HD580 on the headphones had cool round lines to it that made it feel kind of Art Deco.

Despite the improvement in sound, I always thought the visual design of the 600 was a step backward. But some people love that look!

Agreed. If they wanted a professional aura to its appearance, Sennheiser should have just made it a solid black or dark shiny grey and let it be. Fortunately, head-on (pun intended and in the double meaning), you cannot see the marbelite pattern.

They seriously need to update the paint job on the 600's imo. I mean come on, plastic marble effect paint...really? Its like all the worst aspects of the 80's rolled into one. All they need is shoulder pads and to be divorced from Elizabeth Taylor to have the full hand

Uuumm I actually love that plastic marble effect paint on my 600s =X ((hides))

39 posts and I thought whoaa seems like some big deals are on and I might just have missed them again. The actual posts however went from discussing audio quality and bit rates to headphones sounding vs looking good.

Sigh

MEElec A151s for $34 ($36 w/mic)...had these for a while now and they still get ear time.
Good all-rounder, comfortable fit (to me), nice cable, etc.
http://www.amazon.com/MEElectronics-A151-BK-Balanced-Armature-Headphones/dp/B004OBZ2XQ

Without Prime, the $36 ones would be cheaper because of free shipping over $35

If you hate inline mics, then you can buy an 'Add On' item like this Mouse Pad for a couple bucks to push the order over $35

Teac AI-301DA-BK Pre-Main Amplifier with Bluetooth USB and DAC (Black)
http://www.amazon.com/Teac-AI-301DA-BK-Pre-Main-Amplifier-Bluetooth/dp/B00L9FRJVS

Priced has dropped to $449!

  1. ICEpower 50ASX2-SE Class-D power amp
    60W + 60W (4 ohms) high output
2.8MHz/5.6MHz DSD native playback (via USB input)
    Bluetooth playback with aptX codec
    BurrBrown PCM1795 digital-to-analog converter

Info here:
http://www.teac.com/product/ai-301da/
DAC, DSD, Speaker Amp, Headphone amp, Remote, analog and digital inputs.
This baby has it all.

A cool product. Reminds me of Creative's Sound Blaster X7

•Burr-Brown PCM1794 DAC
  1. (USB, USB host mode for iOS or OTG-compatible Android, Multipoint Bluetooth with aptX and AAC, Optical with Dolby Digital Live 5.1 decoding)

•RCA line-in input
•Optical output
•DSP chip (for mixing volume of concurrent audio source playback, processing headphone surround, EQ adjustments)
•Class-D Texas Instruments TPA3116D2 Stereo Speaker Amp (50Wx50W @ 4 ohms max output, can switch modes for 8 ohm speakers)
  1. +3.5mm jacks for active L/R rear, center, and subwoofer speakers

•Texas Instruments TPA6120A2 Headphone Amp (2.2 Ohm output impedance, two headphone jacks for sharing, improved from TI's reference design)
•Bluetooth remote control app for iOS/Android

$400
It's new and strictly speaking the price hasn't been discounted, but it's a deal in respect to competitive options.

No native DSD compatibility, but I don't have any DSD files, and the SBX Surround DSP is more important *TO ME*. It's nice having an all-in-one hub that can do it all, good to know there are several options in this category. I use mine with my PC, iPad, and Playstation 4.

That's half the beauty of this hobby. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there's a can for everyone out there.

I'm tempted to do this.  However, unsure about a couple things.  Is the Shure 2-year warranty still valid (unauthorized seller?).  Where do they purchase the product from??  Think I read you cannot return it if you don't think it's worth it.

With a price this high, it makes me really worried.

Great question - I was curious about this as well so I looked into it. It looks like Massdrop does not try to sell things directly, but instead coordinates a "group buy" the same way one of us would do it here on Head-Fi. Massdrop ensures there are enough interested buyers and then contacts Shure, who then agrees to lower the price based on the number of participants. As such, warranties and returns would take place directly through Shure I believe. These are not "gray market" items, but products provided directly through each company.

Here is a bit more detail from the Massdrop FAQ:

Is Massdrop an authorized seller of each product? Do you offer product warranties?

Massdrop isn’t a store or retailer; we are an online platform that makes it possible for people to buy together. As a result, our relationships with vendors are less typical than a normal online store. All warranties, product defects, or malfunctions should be handled directly with the manufacturer. If they are unwilling to honor their product warranty, contact us within the manufacturer’s warranty period and we will coordinate the product exchange or repair on your behalf.

Thanks for the info.  I went ahead and did it.  $819 is such a good deal for those, and no tax or shipping.  If I don't end up liking them (which is a slim chance), I can sell them for probably more than that.
