The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

OK. I think I may now be a few pages closer to the community on this thread than what I was before. I MIGHT be on the on the same page, but I leave that up to you all to say.

I did further burn in on my 250ohm 880s and nothing changed. I also changed the pads to a worn pair of velours from my former 770-32s I had. Nothing much of a difference. I also tried them directly from the Roland Super UA interface and the Roland Mobile UA interface. Same sound signature. Maybe a bit less bass with the other two compared to plugging them to the A20 amp.

I still think these 880 250s are heavy on the bass, that leaks onto the mids. I think these are bass-emphasized, boomy, headphones. If consumer headphones to me usually sound like 80% bass and 20% the rest. The 880 250s are 55% bass and 45% the rest. "Clear" is not a word I would use for them. This impression is further cemented by the fact that I got a 600ohm 880 pair here for a few days. From the first listen I could immediately tell that THIS is the headphone I have been reading about.

I think the 600ohm version is what I was looking for from the very beginning: a neutral-ish, not so clinical, revealing, tight bass representing headphone. I wonder why I did not research this further a few years ago as I could have just skipped the 250 and gone for this one from the start. I suspect it is because the largely held believe that these headphones require specialty amps to drive.

Last week I thought I was either insane or deaf: "Surely the 880s online are not the ones I have. Am I too sensitive to bass? Are those guys bass deaf? Is my pair fake? Why does rain come from above? When will we evolve into a type II civilization?"

I don't think these (600ohm) are lacking bass. Perhaps it is my understanding of what "having bass" is what makes me doubt I have the same impression as others. I can hear what's down there with these. I love it that they show me that there is bass but it is not pushing the bass so as to push for excitement, which is what I hear the most from the consumer market. I feel the bass, I hear it, but it is not affecting the rest of the spectrum. Love it!

Also they seem to have a certain speed to them that the 250ohm or my previous 770s do not have. Mmmmm

Now curious about them 990 600s....

Only real difference I hear between the 250 and 600 ohm models is that the latter is brighter and comes with slightly better bass quality. Then again maybe you got one of the much older 600 ohm variants from back when the 880 was an insanely bright headphone with no bass whatsoever…or maybe you got the black edition 250 ohm which is tuned differently with warmth in mind.
Otherwise your post does not make sense to me. Sorry.
Either way…seems like you found a keeper. That’s all that matters really:)

600ohm is as recent as Amazon has it in stock.

My 250ohm is the grey/silver Pro, perforated cup, as standard issue as it gets, bought in 2016 from a beyer dealer store.

Hey,

Does the actual DT880 Driver itself fits a DT880 Studio from 1993?

Thank you
According to the BD spare parts page that the DT800 250Ω driver is the same as the driver for the DT800 pro.

https://europe.beyerdynamic.com/catalog/product/view/id/1350/

I'd actually recommend replacing both of the drivers as there's likely to be some manufacturing changes over the years that may well result in a driver imbalance when combining a new with an old driver, especially a driver nearly 30 years old (god, were the early 90's really thirty years ago - I'm old)

This thread somehow just tagged me this morning. Good advice above: I've got a 1981 600Ω (as well as the current one) that is so valuable to me it won't leave my listening chair. I'm familiar with Beyer stuff through the years, and there are "manufacturing changes" over time that raises likelihood of tonal mis-match if you replace it with a current part. The sound signature morphed a bit over the years with tiny mfg revisions that affect anything from the resonant cavities (both sides of the driver) to the driver itself. I didn't search far enough back to know why you're interested in a '93 replacement driver (regardless of ohm), but if you want to restore the signature of the '93, I'd swap in a new pair of drivers at the same time. Again, not knowing the issue, it might be worth digging into the can to see if there's an "open" or a simple membrane patch-up for the offending side.

is anyone using dt880 600 with real hi end audio? that is a system worth many thousands.

I will be on Monday... how does that help? Did you want to send money? :D

I don't consider my system hi-end, more like mid-fi, but it still cost many thousands because I get to pay EU taxes + random fees on most of what I buy.

I listen to my DT 880 600 ohms cans through my Cavalli Liquid Gold and they sound great

Phonitor 2 does a surprisingly good job of making the 600 ohm version twist and shout. About 10:00 on the volume dial approaches head-banging volumes. This is a nice set of cans for the money but whoever ok'd the "headpad" on these has some explaining to do. Most painful set of cans I can remember. And the adjustment mechanism on the sliders, srsly...

• I would normally have the Woo WA2 powering the DT880-600 ohm (as in post #12,220 above). Right now, it is the Violectric V200, connected to the Mystique by XLR/XLR Forza Noir Hybrid interconnects.
• What a great job the V200 does! With a +/- 30 volt swing (per the manual), the high impedance DT880s are handled with aplomb. Result: wide dynamics, stable imaging, clear transients…music!…🎼🥲. Kudos also to the Lavricable Grand Silver h/p cable…👏.

Quote:
The term "hi-fi" — or "high fidelity" — dates back to the 1950s when it was used to describe audio equipment that was able to faithfully reproduce music. It meant that the music sounded like you were listening to the band or artist in person.

Now, how on earth would you NOT call your system hi-fi!!!????

I'm tempted to say that some headphones costing 1000 and 1000 euro are not hifi.

Cost has nothing to do, if it's hifi!

Now! Where is my coffee!?
