The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Thanks for the reply! Looks like the German maestros could be denser than the beyerdynamic ones, but very hard to say from the photos. The foam looks too thick though, like the Beyer foam. I tried an extra layer of Beyer foam once on my old 880 Pro, because someone on the internet was saying great things about that, but everything becomes a bit too grainy or muffled then, plus your ears touch the foam all the time, so meh..

Yea I was looking at brainwavz pads myself but decided not to go for those since they all seem oval, and I don't wanna stretch them out for an hour trying to get them on (like i did once on a hifiman). But if they're so isolating I do believe they will be too boomy indeed. The Annie pads have a bit of ventilation at the back it seems (I think also the hole is a tiny bit bigger than the stock pads'), and even with these Annie pads the bass is already getting a little thick/boomy for me, it's still okay but I wouldn't want any more bass than this.
Was also thinking of trying 770 pads, but read somewhere on this forum they don't have holes either and make the sound muddy, so those will probably be worse than the Annies too.

I did also some comparison with the 600Ohm-model, they do sound a little different, basically the 600 has a bit more bass and a somewhat smoother/more refined sound overall, with the 250Ohm sounding a little more exciting in the highs but a bit rougher/edgier maybe. The 600 still has accentuated highs around 9k-ish, and sounds still a bit hissy or tizzy to me. I feel that could be helped by a really clean sounding high-end amp, maybe then the 600Ohm will really come alive and rise above the other models, but such an amp is probably much more expensive than the phone.
So, they're good headphones, but in the end probably a little too focused in the mid-treble for me. So far I've had the dt880 (all 3 higher impedance versions), HD600, HD650, K7XX Massdrop, HE400S, and some others, and not sure which is my clear favorite. Although the 880-250Ohm with the bassier pads was really exciting sounding, so probably that's my favorite option of those then. Although i'll go try the regular K701/702 phones from AKG soon for the first time, will see how they fare.

I just upgraded my rig to a DT880 600 ohm and an O2 amp from Mayflower and last night listened to Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic (EMI) doing Bruckner's 8th symphony, among other classical items. My god, the crystal clarity, the depth. It's fricking amazing. I can't wait to get home and listen to them some more. It's just delightful. I never want to take them off.

I have the DT880 600 and wait til you try a little better amp with them and you'll really be impressed. I use a Little Dot MKIII and a Keces with them with great results.

I really liked my 600 Ohm DT880 when I used an SET output transformerless tube amp; the La Figaro 336C.

I have the DT 880 600 and it sounds great out of my Gungnir multibit and mjolnir 2. And the 600 sounds sublime out of my Yggdrasil and Cavalli Liquid Gold or Glass. I am impressed how well these cans scale up with the equipment used. I use my Dt 880's about every other week, for some classical and jazz.

After weeks of convincing myself that my ears deserve a pair from the holy trinity of last decade, I bought a pair of 880s on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Beyerdynami...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

It was a pair of 'all black' Black Special Edition 880/250s. But after finding the whole Beyer site I couldn't find the product's page.
So what model are these exactly??? Manufaktur Black??
Well my amp is Fiio A5 and I'm not sure if it can drive the 600Ohm version of 880s.

^Think they're a special edition, not the manufaktur, since the headband covering seems a little different. The metal headband seems the same though, as the Edition and Manufaktur odels. (So I don't think it has the (clampier) Pro headband).
So yeah, it's gonna sound exactly the same as the Edition 250 model, only look a little nicer. That Fiio A5, if it's a similar model as the previous E12A, should drive the 250 ohm no problem yeah, although I can't say anything about the headphone-amp matching. Don't know if it can drive a 600Ohm version.

BTW, these headphones have such a tight, clean and high-res sound, it's pretty amazing.. Maybe lacks a touch of dynamism here and there, but the very good "punch" to the sound makes up for that.

I imagine them as a more neutral iteration of my current DT990Pro 250.
It's very frustrating that every time I buy something I really craved for eBay shipping seems ridiculously slow.
When buying some minor things, say, iPod LOD, the shipping was lightning fast lol.

^Here's a recent review of the 880 (also the all-black one) on youtube:
I saw the video (long ago) and I must say I didn't think these were all-black ones. Are you sure that these are the same as mine?
I hate and loathe the contrast of matte black and that shiny chrome.
Should have bought the standard premium 250..

PS I thought by 'all black' they really mean all black, as pictured here s-l1600.jpg

Don't worry. They are probably the Massdrop edition judging by the image on your ebay link.

Here is the Massdro page. There was a choice between 250 and 600 ohm.
