The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Been into iem's for quite a while and finally got a chance to fire up the LD MKIII with the DT880's...precise, clean, deep & detailed.
I've heard some great little iem's but they can't do what this setup does. Crazy how even when you have something this good we still search and demo other equipment...I mean I know there are setups that are superior but how much more would you have to spend to get an increase in sq...I was thinking of selling off the DT880 & LD but maybe I should keep them and sell off all my other equipment...

I haven't got too far into the iem realm. Only have the following~
Puro IEM500
Kz ED-9
Kz HDS1
Kz ATE
Kz EDSE
Kz ED3 Acme
Kz ZS1
Meelec CW31 Wooden
Mrice BALDOOR E300
Xiaomi Piston 2
ROCK Zircon

I'm thinking of getting a couple more but I also have some other great full size cans I don't get to hear as much as I should. I really would like to get down to one or two setups and just a small handful of hp's so they would get more headtime. We will see...

What would be better for the DT 880 600 Ohms if I want the clearest neutral sound signature with as little harshness as possible, and that I can connect to the HRT microstreamer DAC, the Schiit Magni or Vali?

That is ugly. No two ways about it - absolute ugly.

However, if it works and performs well then that's good - always better to have function before form than form before function.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I'd say go with the Vali since many people swear by how wonderfully it pairs with the DT880. Besides Magni is a little bright and that doesn't seem to be what your're looking for.

I don't mind brightness if it's not harsh..

Do you know how the Vali compares to the Magni for the DT 880?

How does DT990 sound like compare to DT880? Massdrop has a pretty decent price on DT880/600

Totally different sound signatures. The dt990 is v shaped, with very pronounced mid bass hump abd peaky treblr. Mids are recessed on the 990. 880 is of course flat, with i think better extension on both ends. Depends on what you are looking for.

DT990 has more open soundstage, brighter treble, more mid-bass, lusher but recessed midrange.
DT990 is a bit more textured than DT880 but DT880 is much better in terms of macro-detail.

Both are nice, but DT880 is more of a reference headphone.

Interesting that you find the 990 more textured. My experience with it was the opposite, but i guess ymmv.

Well, yeah...
There's still a chance that we are using the word 'texture' with a slightly different meaning (or not).

DT990 always offered more micro detail to me.
(Cimbals, metal winds (often way too loud), violin, viola, cello...)
DT990's offered a more vibrant presentation at the big expense of macro-detail and bass clarity.

DT880s while much more neutral and tonally correct, it has its own sort of veil in my book.

The other day I was comparing HD650 and DT880 with a pretty good opera recording (Carmen).
Even considering the much darker HD650 presentation, the violins still sounded more textured.
All in all, I still preferred DT880 over HD650 with that particular recording due to the more open and uncoloured presentation, but can't deny the violins were more violin-like on HD650.
