In respect of the sheer tone, I sense some more warmth and a bit friendlier highs (nothing spectacular though), and the bass balance is a bit shifted away from the deep bass towards the kick bass. Guess the deep bass needs a bit time to come out completely.

Great impressions! That sensuous, musical deep bass, never overpowering, is one of the things I really like about the 250s. It'll be interesting to hear if that comes out more in the 600s with some burn-in. thanks!

Incredibly well described, IMO.

Yes, one of the 250ohm drivers died so I figured I might as well go to 600ohm drivers. Sound really nice. Very balanced and detailed across the frequency range. Don't have the soundstage or seperation of my K701s though. Also haven't heard any harshness or sibilance so far. Don't know if they will burn in much, haven't noticed any burn in so far.

Will post pics if anyone wants.

^ Nice.

Nicely put Nickchen! I listened to them some more and I have to agree with you. They sound fuller and a lot faster than the 250ohm ones. It was clearly heard with some Linkin Park that I A/Bed with.

My DT880, which was previously a 3 year-old 880/250, modified by a silver plated copper cable and 600 ohm drivers:

And with jmoney pads:

For those wondering the differences between DT880/600 and K601: K601s are much more mid-centric, more musical, and less detailed. I prefer K601s, when I look for something laid-back (mostly when I'm ready to sleep basically). DT880/600s are much more suitable for analytical qualities, thanks to very high level of detail, a fully transparent and more aggressive sound with excellent speed for such a wide soundstaged headphone.

Mine still sound dryer (thinner?) at the bottom than my 250s.

My old 250s sounded nutty thick & bloated though, which had been carried to extremes by my built-in 200Ω pre-resistors. I still have those resistors in place and made them switchable (0Ω - off - 200Ω), but their effect to the 600s is close to nothing (different damping factor or so). I recommend a pre-resistor more to the 250Ω fraction consequently...

After 24h or so they already compete with my holy MS Pro and do a proper job even with complicated and fast stuff like Amon Tobin or Squarepusher. That is quite a change

, all my previous Beyers (DT990'1992, DT770'250, DT531, DT880'2003, DT880'2005) were Downbeat & Ambient only due to their daft Beeeeeeyer bass.

As I have two 250Ω systems and two 2003 housings left now, I think about rebuilding a DT880'2003 as pure wooly deep bass machine. The 600Ω is waaaay too fast for Ambient now...

Yes, definitely - and sounds good doing it.

Personally I would prefer these over the D2000s which are the only denons I've heard. The denons are very euphonic sounding with a lot of boost on the treble and the bass where as the DT880s are much more balanced across the frequency range and very analytical and fast. So it comes down to whether you prefer euphony or neutrality.

Exactly + won't warm up / distort / colour the sound like tube amps do.

No problem, I was in the same skeptics camp myself, next thing I did is purchased 600Ohm Manufaktur DT880 and compared it to my 250Ohm version. The difference out of SS amp (GS-1) was so apparent that I was surprised Beyer didn't name them differently. I agree on DT770 comments, I didn't hear that much difference between 250 and 600Ohm version as on DT880.

They didn't name them differently because I guess they possess the same sound signature + the fact that Beyerdynamic's product line = the most confusing ever.

I haven't yet received my DT880/600 yet. They are shipping on Monday. But I do have the Denon D5000 and they are really good phones for everything BUT rock. For rock, I always go for my Grados, but I've read that Beyers do rock well also. I'll let you know as soon as they get here.
