It strongly depends on what you looking for and what earphones you want to pair with. It's hard to say "upgrade" here when comparing top DAPs. AK120 isn't a upgrade of dx100 or 901. But neither dx100 nor 901 is a upgrade of ak120 too. It all comes down to personal preference. If you have a earphone that pairs dx100 perfectly, I don't see why you should force yourself to try another DAP. But if you want portable DAP with no bugs, fast UI and a overall musical sounding that technically on par with dx100, ak120 might be a better choice. Upgrade is more like 801 > 901 situation, although some earphones might still pair with 801 better.

I guess the best way is to just go down to my audio store and compare it with my own songs. Then I can see which I like better. Thanks

Can you please let us know how the AK120 pairs with the IEM you got and which one pairs the best? I will be doing that once I get mine. Hopefully this way we can paint a better picture about the properties of the AK120.

Sure I will do that when I think ak120 doesn't burn in any more:) And hopefully my 1+2 will arrive by then :)

I heard 1Plus2 and AK120 seems to pair wonderfully. I am hoping to order the UM 3DD and see how they pair. My ears still prefer a good dynamic driver more than the accuracy that the BA offer.

Yeah 1+2 and ak120 seem to a end game paring~ The bass is dynamic driver, you want the mid and tweeter drivers to be dynamic too?

I still don't really understand if this is or isn't an upgrade to the DX100. Some say it is while others say that it isn't.

That sounds like just about everything on Head-Fi ...everyone has their own perception of sound...so i usually decide for myself...

On paper ASG-2 seems to have everything right but my ears still prefer dynamic for Bass and mid-range. I think if I those frequencies are done right I really do not mind the highs. Sadly I dont hear pass the 17 khz so highs frequencies for me is just a bonus.
I am really skeptical about the current hybrid technology, I simply do not know how they mix, the balance armature technology is well established the companies seem to have a hard time getting the cross over right, I simply do not know how hybrid IEM deal with this problem.

My "end game pairing" now is FT334+AK120 but am intrigued enough by the many positive impressions on hybrids lately to test out Gavin's 1plus2 as soon as my schedule allows

For those who have the AK120, can you please tell me where is it made, and if the battery life is longer then AK100, does it get warm after using it for hours? Is the UI much different then AK100?
Many thanks

1. Made in Korea
2. I got largely the same playtime with a single charge (~13 hrs, non continuous, largely in 1 to 2 hrs chunks) but I use lower volume compared to AK100 (around 35 while I used 40ish for AK100)
3. It never gets warm
4. Start up is a little faster, UI wise largely the same but there is a new "Home" icon that brings up the 6 buttons for quick access to browsing via album, folder, genre, etc. and the settings menu. This makes navigation more intuitive and less "clicks"

You didn't go for the AmpDuo :p? Did you try the AmpDuo before getting the Pure?

Holy Gavin now I think I'll need to take a full day off or two to listen to all your gigs....

Supposedly, I am told that there's no difference in the amp board. The duo just have an eq board in addition. Something that I will never touch.

I have heard the Duo...haven't heard the Pure yet.......nor the Intruder. I don't like auditioning....in and out of the shop ASAP :)

To save my behind I actually ordered this for my wifey... was too naive to hope she won't notice the subtle difference between the AK100 and AK120..
