Off topic: Why is GRR Martin scared of Canadians?
Have you ever met a Canadian? Many of them can put on a convincing act of being normal humans and some of them are actually normal but catch them off guard or when they’re not trying and they’re really scary. That’s what happens when you cross an American with a Frenchman and give them their own region (Quebec) to play in! lol

France won’t take them back!

I haven't been very active here lately and posts like this is one reason. Who is GRR Martin and how is his (I suppose we are talking about a man) fear of Canadians established? I am just so lost with the discussions here nowadays. I don't get the memos required!

I had to look it up myself and I also assume they are talking about George R.R. Martin, an American author and television writer and producer. His novels apparently formed the basis for Game Of Thrones. I have no idea what his fear of Canadians refers to though...

I used to work in finance valuing financial derivatives, and I can tell you that I hated the stuff the Canadian authorities came up with. Embedding a redemption floor on their linkers for example. No tangible benefit to the bond holder after about a year or so of no sustained deflation (almost guaranteed; sustained periods of deflation don't really happen), but for the next 30 years those things are a royal pain in the backside to price.

Thanks. In fact this person is what my googling gave me, but I assumed he is not the correct person as I don't see how an author is connected to an audio discussion board like this. I haven't watched Game of Thrones and I have never heard of Song of Ice and Fire.

Thanks for posting this. I feel less alone with my confusion as to what this is about.

I know nothing about financial derivatives and I don't know what you are talking about. I suppose this is about some financial regulation set by Canadians as they are actually sane compared to americans who think regulations are always bad. Americans can afford doing crazy things with the economy, because they use US dollar, which is still THE currency in the World, but Canadians have their own dollar without such status and some regulations are needed.

No, nothing to do with regulations, but too complicated to explain. Please feel free to ignore, it is as OT as is a fear of Canadians... :)

He wrote books that include dragons and the freezing north. Just a few posts earlier there was a talk about "Dragon Scale" technology and "frozen waffles", hence the connection.

A joke (most probably :-), if not then sorry). The books include zombie-like creatures that live in the north. So he is "scared" of what's in the north. Who also lives in the north (of the USA)? Canadians.

The best jokes are the ones you have to explain.:crying_cat_face:

Ah; I've not read his books nor did I watch GOT, so that one was lost on me.

My entire engagement with GOT is limited to a cover of the theme tune by a German Hurdy-Gurdy player I like:

I see the connection now, thanks!

Sounds like another case of American exceptionalism to me. There is no Canada to the north of here, nor to any other country in the world.

Canada is ok for a second world country. It’s kind of like USA Lite.
