SRH840 impression

Yea sorry, I'm not prposely trying to compare... just trying to explain what I like. Basically what I mean is I am satisfied with the Q701 as my open can, GR07 as my IEM.

Now, all I need is a closed can with 'somewhat of a nuetral' sound like the others. If I'm looking for the impossible... forgive me for not knowing. I do know closed vs open vs IEM will all sound different.

The 840 really isn't neutral. The 940 or 440 is better for that, or the Sony V6 / 7506.

And you say they are not neutral because of the bass, right? Maybe the velour pads will make the 840 somewhat neutral by reducing the bass like you said? I inquired about the 940, already, but people keep mentioning they are too bright. Have you tried the 940? How bright are the highs compared to the GR07? I find those highs to be the peak for my ears.
 
Also, like I said before I don't mind the 840 being bassy. I actually could use a bassier can, but I like my highs to still be crisp.

Perhaps the 9kHz treble peak is stronger than what Headroom shows:
 

 
Edit: yay, the harshness that I started to notice with my SRH840 went away.
Edit2: looks like it will depend on the source whether the harshness goes or sticks around.

Both the elevated bass (mostly midbass) and treble take the 840 away from neutral. The 940 is definitely not bassy like the 840, though personally I didn't find the highs too bright. I only had them for a brief time though, before I traded them off for something else (I don't even remember what at this point, lol). I never tried the 940 pads on the 840, but from my experience with many other closed headphones and changing pads, velour pads almost always give less bass response than pleather ones. 
 
I do own the GR07, but never compared them directly with the 840. I like how they both present their treble in a relatively even manner, but beyond that I do not have enough recollection of the 840 to make a direct comparison.

Thank you for all your input. I went ahead and ordered the 840 brand new from Amazon for $149. I could keep searching for answers, but i'll find them quicker by actually trying them for myself. If I don't like them, I can just return them and then try the 940.

How is the upper, sub and mid bass on them? I like a strong bassline, but I'm not a basshead. Also, will there be sibilance with certain recordings on the Realtek HD onboard soundcard? How is the instrument separation, imaging and detail? How are the mids and highs?

IMO the 840 is a big step down. The 940 has a lot more detail. I don't find them to be bright in a grating way. The peak usually just brings out more presence (even if a bit artificially forward). I noticed you own the 701s which I would consider brighter and harsher in the treble than the 940s for some perspective.

I don't know if I would say the 940 is more detailed... it has less bass than the 840, which makes it easier to pick out detailing though.
 
I would rank the K701 above the 940 though, but I chalk a lot of that also to open vs closed.

The E11 is about $60 brand new. It has a bass boost that is highly praised but it's a portable amp with no DAC.
