excellent review... a good guide on how to appreciate this new SONY can...
and calibrate my expectations vs Sony's mktg goals/claims :
"Hi Res...studio quality sound... keep sound in...3Hz-100kHz"  etc )

now to wait for the price to settle..:p

or a Z10 next year...
(would like better isolation, more bass weight, woodcup$, real leather..slightly more organic sound)

With a matching "flagship" pricing to compare head to head with the like of HD800, LCD-3, AKG812, TH900, etc....

I wonder if ambient temperature in the aluminium would alter the sound? Colder would be better?

The only thing that changes in the Al is that it shrinks slightly as the temperature decreases. Considering we're talking about a maximum difference of may be 50 degC from the warmest to coldest you're likely to use your headphones, dimensional change will be around 0.001155 times any linear dimension or 0.00345 times in terms of volume.

Unless you're listening to them while, say common gases have liquefied or the aluminum has burnt through the plastic cups and is cooking its way through your head, there really shouldn't be any difference.

the drivers will be more sluggish for a start... phase incoherence betw cups can result if say...your left cup is nearer the fireplace. :p

Does anyone have a comparison between Z7 and Audeze LCD 2? I am thinking of buying a high end headphone that is forgiving, because I have a lot of badly mastered songs. If anyone has other recommendations, I am happy to take it.

I have compared vs the LCD3.  The LCD3 sounds sorta bright next to the Z7.  Whereas the LCD3 is mid-centric, the Z7 is bass centric.  The Z7 is easier to listen at louder volumes and easier on bright masterings.

Thank you for the info. In that case, LCD 3 is most definitely not what I am looking for. If I am not mistaken, LCD 3 is basically an improved version of the LCD 2, no? I am afraid that LCD 2 might also sound bright for my songs then.

my lcd2v2 is never bright nor sibilant.

a less costly but spectacular can to research into is the dt150.

I owned the LCD-2 versions 1 and 2 and personally I'd take the Z7 over those.

Finally got my MDR-Z7 over here in Sweden. I'm in no way an experienced audiophile so impressions on sound quality would be sparse. My Walkman ZX1 is not giving them justice, even my Xperia Z3 seem to output slightly louder. My Vaio Z does not really deliver any exceptional sound either. Unexpectedly, the Vaio Duo 11 gave me a glimpse of how their potential but the plan has always been to eventually get the PHA-3. I've previously used the MDR-1R and MDR-Z1000 (also own MDR-1RNC and MDR-XB910) and mainly the in-ears XBA-H3 (which is wonderful paired with the Walkman ZX1). So far, the MDR-Z7 is the most comfortable headphone I've used (and slightly smaller than expected).

I haven't heard the LCD2 in a while, but if it's anywhere close to LCD2 I'd take it over the Z7 for sound quality, but I would never buy one for comfort.

Well nobody is saying the LCD2 is bright or sibilant, but I am saying the Z7 is dark compared to the Audezes.
