It's a good reminder about not resetting on custom firmware. Yes it's stated, but easy to forget. There'd rarely be a reason to reset, but if you were selling or buying with custom installed (as I've often seen) it could be easy to do before sending or upon receiving.

i just put this to the FAQ txt with big , bold letters

not a reset guy but still it's better to be pro active and remember this bit

Also, if you have an Android phone, it's quick and easy to tether your WM to the phone, change region in a text editor, reboot and go. I haven't connected my WM1Z to a computer in years.
Mind enlightening me how to go about accessing the settings files through Android phone? I’ve tried connecting but unable to access the WM1A files through file explorer.
It will be so convenient to be able to edit settings through phone.

Does WM1A with the Walkman One have MQA capability? My MQA files are played just as FLAC files. They are flac 24/48 - MQA 192.

Yes but some tags need to be filled in in the files for the Sony players to recognize them as mqa. There is/was a tool available on the mqa web site for download that will scan flac files and fill in those tags

I have no clue why you're so sure that the answer is "no" :)

Yes, but MQA on WM1 players is based on certain MQA tags that tracks usually have.

There is an official app that can restore those tags after scanning the file. The app is not available on the MQA website anymore (since MQA was bought by someone else), but you can find it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m7kM0WkMW9_mMw1Q8D1oQCxUN2bGOZUm/view?usp=sharing

Thank you. Works now! If the files are MQA-192 does the player play them as 24bit 192KHz?

I thought I knew, but am discovering I was wrong - have never heard of this capability before this.

Well, when MQA came out so many dacs/daps labeled the compatibility on the device, and even rereleased an MQA model. I never bothered with MQA so wasn't aware myself.

So how does the Plus mode version work?

There's V1, V2 and Normal?

You boot into the Plus modes by turning it on and then turning the hold button to UP when booting? How do you know you're it's booted into the plus mode?
It is controlled by these 2 settings in the settings file. The first one decides which plus mode to use and the second one defines which mode is booted into by default and which mode is booted into if the hold switch is up. In the example I use mode 2 and boot into it with the hold switch down. In the unit info in the gui you can see what mode you are in.

I have an NW-WM1A that I purchased from Amazon in January 2017. As shown on the engraved label it was manufactured in October 2016 and was meant to be sold in the E, AUS, and JE regions. I can confirm that the unit came with a capped volume threshold and I subsequently uncapped it--it remains so to this day.

As you can see, I have successfully installed MrWalkman's Walkman One (WM1Z) firmware mod.

My quandary is that the posts that point to the tools and instructions to address the regions are mostly circa 2020 and the links that point to sites off the Head-Fi pages are mostly broken. As a result, I haven't been able to find the tools to allow me to confirm the regions and to make changes if they are required.

Also, it is unclear to me whether the regions are addressed in the Walkman One (WM1Z) firmware.

So, if anyone can shed some light on the current status of the firmware and the regions dilemma, I'd be grateful.

Thank you in advance.
