Is it normal for the tunings to uninstall themselves?
Was using my A55 today and noticed the time was way out of wack - presumably because I let the battery go completely dead a while back. I also noticed in the unit info menu that my external tuning wasn't applied (also confirmed in the boot log).
I reinstalled it no problem, just wondering if this is supposed to happen
Either the tuning was not installed (or not the correct one according to the chosen sound sig in the settings file), or the sig was changed which makes it show again that the tuning is not installed (so you'd go and install the chosen one).
Also, the date could be different after installing Walkman One, or maybe it's indeed because of the battery thing.

IIRC, going by what the boot log says, the sig was working and installed right up until the time went out of wack.
I do remember in the not so distant past (sometime this summer) the battery went dead (to the point of it not even turning on enough to tell me the battery was dead). It never occurred to me to check the time or other settings once I did charge it.
Out of curiosity then, when the tuning is "not installed" what does the device fall back on?
but perhaps I hadn't allowed for burn-in (!), as I am getting perfectly good punch off this little A55. Given the surprising amount of detail, I do prefer the Sony. With Walkman One (cheers!) a great hifi purchase.

Yes the A55 with WalkmanOne is a fantastic unit as long as you don’t need any more power than it can deliver. Had this combo been available 6 years ago I would have made do with it and my JH13 rather than getting a 1Z and IER-Z1R (though both of thosd clearly are better)
Is the hobby one of being practical, really? I’d love to try something like that setup, but it would then mean not turning back to modest kit like mine! I would prefer, given a choice, to spend my last nickel on supporting the recording biz.

Absolutely agree. IMO once you’ve found the sound you like and love and find yourself being immersed in whatever you throw at it, then that’s just it. Forget about whatever else is out there or a promise of something better. What’s better? Better compared to what? Upgrading most of time often leads to disappointment. Keep and cherish what you have and like. And always remember that something new or upgraded may not always give you the same level of enjoyment you’re currently enjoying.
Enjoy the music folks. I can’t live without music and my current setup is all I’ll ever need.

I can only say that I bought the A55 on impulse, and that I was most certainly disappointed with the stock sound. Thank the Internet for (not only mentioning the hardware but also) suggesting WalkmanOne could be a thing to try. That, friends, means now an item to cherish. But I like shopping as much as the next person: I just have to be realistic.

It's just an endless pit very much driven by the manufacturers. As @aceedburn wisely said "Forget about whatever else is out there or a promise of something better." I'd far rather spend my time enjoying my music than be obsessing over hardware or software.
Likes of the WM1A/Z you get a lot of features for your $$$$, and you also pay handsomely but the quality is most definitely there as is the longevity. TBH past a certain point is just personal taste or you just want to treat yourself to a luxury product.

Seen where people have sold out a good working setup to fund the latest new "thing" only to be brutally disappointed and that's harsh. Like you if you have a sound, you like stick with it, can still engage with the community. If you keep chasing the "Grail" it's a never-ending spiral and is what it is, a game of diminishing returns.
Admittedly we're blessed with the Sony Linux based DAP's as they have such tremendous flexibility versus many others where your locked in & locked out. Sadly, Sony Corp decided to go with the latter, so no sale here...
