The dac in the player pumps it out like Flac.

HD1 surprisingly plays Z1R unbalanced with no problem.

I don’t understand how a +$1500 iem plays flawlessly without needing an expensive dac.

That is the mark of a great headphone that it will sound good with relatively humble equipment and then keep scaling up with better and better equipment

Maybe because DACs and Amps have been figured out a long time ago and it doesn't cost a fortune to make a excellent one.

Like @DONTGIVEUP sonn will be testing a sony MiniDisc (early 1990 model) with IER-Z1R . My hubby bought the battery for it. This mosel has no PC interface, but a line-in and MIC-in inputs. My plan is to use wm1a, 3.5 in High gain col. 95/120 to "record" and twst that lossy ATRAC 1.0 292 Kbps

Minidisc players from that era only has about 10mW@16ohm from the headphone output, you won't be able to drive the IER-Z1R. :deadhorse:

Ha ha. I’m not that much into minidiscs and older Sony tech. But when I go the thrift/junk store I just can’t leave it. But if it’s complete in the box and in really good condition I have to pick it up. Usually prices are half or less of Ebay monstrosity prices.

I dont know the headphone out of the HD1 walkman but it drives Z1R without any problems.

If u have any minidiscs around please test it and let us know what it sounds like! If not capable you can always connect dac and enjoy it at home!

I wanted to share something with you guys.

I've been really sick for the past 2 weeks. Nothing truly serious, just a very bad cold. But I couldn't use headphones, especially IEMs during this time. I miss it a lot, so enjoy every minute and don't take it for granted.

Kobe died yesterday. That dude seemed invincible and now he is no more. Not sure where I'm going with this, I guess what I'm trying to say is: Be happy! :)

Yes, the best way to be happy in this hobby is be humble yet grateful for the toys we scooped up. Cheers!

We are all lucky to play with such gear.

Don’t matter if you can or can not drive the ier-Z1R. The matter here is how you are enjoying it.

Don’t be caught in the idea that expensive and high-end headphones or IEMs have to have expensive gears to hook it up to. This comment win the all time vote to me

@nc8000 allow me to copy and paste:

Gave it a spin, sound quite good for lossy 292kbps, some micro detailing is lost, but almost indistinguishable, staging is affected, more cramped, more 2D sounding than wm1a SE

And yes i Imagined i will not be able to drive the IER-Z1R to their best

It's tongue-in-cheek response regarding the "audiophile consensus" that the Z1R requires a high power output. :deadhorse:

I know for a fact that the Sony engineers themselves uses and tested IER-Z1R on low power output devices (30mW or less) which a few here will simply write off as unusable/unlistenable, yet it's a usage scenario they have included during development. It's probably just the usual 10% difference where people exaggerate to be night-and-day.
