The letters are engraved, but the white color will disappear over time. On mine it is completely gone, but they still look much better than any other iem I came across imho.

so after listening to ciems, I still put ex1000 on top for me

I don't bother to try ciems, and plus I have never been a fan of having ugly ears filled with art pieces. Instead I got two pairs of EX1000, nothing else. The problem is, I am now so used to the light-weight & non-intrusive insertion of the EX1000, I will have serious problems getting used to wearing any other iems. The IE80 and 4A.i were examples, putting aside their sound. Wearing the EX1000, I literally feel anything there.

Agreed, I've heard a lot of IEMs and the EX1000 are still on my A-list.

is the 7550/ex800 still a good cheaper alternative though?

Nah, they sound like crap compared to the EX1000.

From our recent PM conversation...

TheBoss: As for the sound, is the MDR ex1000 definitely an up-grade over the MDR 7550 (i currently own a 7550), or is it just a "side-grade" ?

james444: The EX1000 are basically 7550s with a few db more treble emphasis, which makes them more lively, but may induce fatigue particularly if you listen at higher volume. To my ears the LCP diaphragm delivers a slightly more refined and detailed sound overall, that's why I consider them an upgrade. But the sound signature in the lower half of the FR is almost identical to the 7550 and the soundstage is very similar too, the EX1000 just have a tad more forward projection due to slightly less prominent mids.

7550 is a bit subdued in the midhighs and treble and has a tad less subbass than the EX1000. But I'll say EX600/7550/1000 are within 5-10% different IMO, not a crazy amount.

FYI guys, the longer the tip, the more the peaks are tamed on the EX1000, Meelec triflanges are best for these because of this and are large bore, so the treble precense is still there.

My main complaint with the EX1000 is it's treble extension, lacks some air because of this. Sony fixed this with the H3 but tainted the bass and coherency. A5s seem to have the same issues...oh well, EX1000 will be the best Sony IEM for a while....

I don't remember any more how the EX600 sounded in comparison to the EX1000. That was long time ago and my 1st pair of non earbuds. I still wear apple earbuds when I shoot hoops these days.

Never owned or heard the 7550, but I am just wondering why Sony released these three similar iems if they are not much different, not that I care.

I like to hear my music moving fast, airy and lively with power and energy, and the EX1000 are doing excellently in that department.

BTW, my 1st pair of EX1000 has logged at least 4,000 hrs of burn ins.

yess.. i felt everything is in its place on the ex1000, it has a very nice synergy and the dual dacs of 240 maximizing it.. for me it has the best presentation among the iems/ciems some HPs ive heard.. will be ABing them with z5

I have the EX 1000, the H3 and the IE80. The H3 is gathering dust.

After I used the EX1000 for a while, I couldn't get back to use the IE80 any more. IE80 has excellent and silky smooth/elastic treble (not as extended as the EX1000), but for some of my music the lows and mids are overpowered by the bass just not clean enough for my taste.

Although I appreciate quality and pwoerful bass, I am a treble head. Muddy/dark/boomy sounding is my worst enemy.

I have already asked for help on another section, but anyway... where can one find the hybrid LL size tips? Even sony website doesn't have them as spare parts.
