Sony EX1000 Review and Impressions Thread (with comparisons to FX700, GR10 and e-Q5)

Sonove just measured the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of the Etymotic ER4S, Klipsch X5, Ortofon E-Q7, Audio Technica CK100, AKG K3003 and Sony EX1000. Link

Basically the results will rank them like this in THD.
EX1000>K3003>ER4S>>CK100>EQ7>>>X5

Dynamics seem better than the BAs in this aspect.

But what is good enough? That's both a high volume and sweeps besides. IM measurements would be interesting as these are asked to play many tones at a time.

As for these measurements, the CK100 has a lot more distortion below 100hz and a bit less overall above than the Orto. I'd probably switch those. Anything below 60db down (0.1%) should be fine. The Ortofon never exceeds this and the CK100 clearly does, significantly below 80 hz. In fact, the CK100 also exceeds this distortion level at 5k. The x5 sure looks crappy. Of course this is just one measurement to be considered amongst many. Still interesting. Thanks.

I think the "Ay" is the average number (found in each graph below in yellow). Based on that:  K3003>EX1000>ER4S>EQ7>CK100>>X5

The EX1000's THD looks better than the AKGs though.

Thats why there's EQ to solve the problem with bass. Would rather have to EQ down than to EQ up and thus adding distortion to the sound. I EQ down the bass on my FX700s by -3 db and -1 for the midbass. Problem solved . Then again depending on your source the FX700s won't require any EQ at all which I like. Using the Fuze via line out dock and using user flat it sounds great. Using it on normal setting sounds weird. Also using the FX700 via Asio through Media monkey combined with my DACport LX and Fiio E9 amp requires no EQ and the bass is very controlled and tight. Sources make all the diff., even when pumping up the volume.

The spike seems to be the nature of the driver. The spikes aren't that bad though, nothing like ones by the HJE900 or Q-Jays. Foam tips and possible smaller bore tips may make a good difference due to their nature in taming the whole treble region, check out how the EQ7 changes for the better which has a spike of similar altitude.

EQ-7 with supplied silicone tips                                                      EQ-7 with supplied Comply tips.

I think gain is an important factor to consider. Haven't heard it much but the treble spikes weren't a problem until I had to turn the volume higher due to a lack of isolation and more outside noise. Like the FX700, I think these Sonys are more of a in-house relatively quiet setting use IEM. FX700's bass becomes too much in louder settings, same with the EX1000 happens with it's treble. 7550s do seem to do better in this aspect, it's treble seems to be in a Shure-like fashion, but you'll lack the air of the EX1000s. This does make the 7550s more versatile (though less "special"), been interesting in trying these because of that.

hello just need your advice guys..

i've narrowed my choice between the ex1000 and fx700s..

when it comes to durability, are the sonys more durable? since the jvcs are made of wood?

which would be the better rounder of the two?

these are my genres

r&b,hiphop/country > metal/rock > classical/pop

if ever, would the ex1000s satisfy me on its sub-bass and mid-bass? i'm not really a basshead but i do like the bass from the 535s and especially the coppers and kinda enough for me.. do they have more quantity than the 535s? or the same as coppers?

i like the mid bass especially for country songs (eagles, taylor swift, MLTR) ... how would you compare the mid-bass pf the sonys to the senn ie8s (minimum setting)

really looking forward to your help guys i'm about to pull the trigger on these just need more justification to it
thanks

The IE8's are much more awash with mid-bass, whereas the EX1000's present the low end much cleaner. Two different beasts in bass entirely.
