Shure SRH 940 impression and support thread

I agree FR can lead to preconceptions / expectation bias, that's why I try not to look at FR until after I've heard any particular headphone.
 
 
That said, when comparing the Sony EX700 and EX1000 and looking at their FR, I decided the FR wasn't telling me anything at all.
 
 
Thanks electropop I have to check out the 8400 and T50RP's one day.

I love the KRKs and kept the 6400 between the 6400 and 8400. IMO though sadly it doesn't sound like the 6400 has more bass than the SRH-940 to my ears. Probably just more sub-bass. I imagine the 8400 does have more mid-bass though.
I prefer the KNS-6400, but the SRH-940 would perhaps be better for someone who just wants to enjoy their music and not analyze it. With my amp, the SRH-940 had fuller sounding mids that had more texture. A lot warmer sounding (yes, the SRH-940 was somewhat warm to me

). I felt the KRKs were much clearer, have a larger soundstage and are more detailed though. The SRH-940 does seem to have much more forward mids. The mids on the 6400 sound somewhat slightly forward and the 8400 are more flat or more neutral sounding. Very relaxed.
 
I was shocked the KNS-6400 held up so well to the SRH-940 as a studio monitor. BTW I think SRH-940 has the edge for female vocals (why I wanted to try the SRH-940), but the 6400 holds up very well.
 
I think the KNS-8400 would be a good alternative to the SRH-940. Too bad nobody has really compared them yet.

I think I might be the only one who has owned both.
 
I've never thought the SRH-940 would be that impressive as a stand alone studio monitor.  Both the SP-1 and KRK KNS-8400 present the music in a more balanced format, and the SP-1 does have more detail to my ears.  The sparkly treble of the 940 might make it easier to pick up some detail in the upper mids compared to the SP-1, but the SP-1 really does a better job throughout the rest of the spectrum - even matching the 940 in the upper mids (it just isn't shoved at you like the upper mids of the 940 are).
 
As far as the KRK goes, it sounded much more like the SP-1 than the SRH-940.  I know people say "XYZ sounded really neutral to my ears" about headphones too often, when in reality (at least in my experience) not that many truly neutral headphones exist.  The KNS-8400 got really, really close to my ears.  IMHO, it kills the SRH-940 as a monitor.  Not saying anything about the 8400 being a better headphone overall... that has too many variables to account for.
 
Also, the KRK KNS-8400 can be found for as low as 120 USD here in the US.  Ergonomically they are sweet as well.  A steal if you ask me...
 
I can elaborate more on the sonic differences between the KRK and Shure if people would like.  Specific questions would help

The CharterOak SP-1 is a custom version of the old MB Quart QP-450 PRO.  The "updated" version of the QP450 PRO is the GMP450 PRO.  The SP-1 was made somewhere in between in a limited number.  I've tried contacting the company to figure out just how many, but I haven't had any answers yet.  My serial number is 42.
 
I have not head the 6400, unfortunately.

Mmm.... I  was expecting more bass. But the preview from amazon, is small. Beside the little explosion I  hear at begin,
there's a subtle contrabass that I  like (if I'm not mistaken, that's  contrabass) .  I'll see if I  can't get soon some stravinski on my hard drive.

I  was considering to get a German Maestro headphone before the srh940, but I  renounced because I  didn't like how they looked cheap & not comfy (and I  wanted to spend more

). Never mind, musically you like better  your SP-1 ? (Note: You could try to change ear position on srh940, just I've suggested before , you might be surprised ... ).

I also find the comfort superior in the SP-1, but only if you prefer a looser pillow fit to a more secure one.  They certainly aren't as sturdy, but if they're staying as desk cans that should be a problem.
 
The suspension system they utilize at the ear cup is genius if you ask me

I mean about the rendering of SRH940 with rock.
 
For me, rock requires a larger presence of bass/mid-bass. Its an excellent headphone for many genre, but i don't like it for rock.
