Shure SE535: Reviews and First Impressions Thread

The Shure 535 Ltd-J IMO doesn't pack that much of a low end. I find the lows kicks in at around 60-80Hz. Fiddling with the EQ bands on DX50, the lows does not have much of a discernible effect. To me, the W4R has more bass quantity than 535. Vocals on 535Ltd is on the front appealing side with smooth, intimate vocals but seems to be missing just that bit of refinement. Comparing 2 mid-centric phones, the ASG2 has got better vocals portrayal IMO. Details and separation doesn't seem to be the best in its class either falling behind the W4R. Highs extension is good but not buttery smooth.

Just joined the club.

I know full well that there are better IEMs out there, but I have found my endgame.

I did a systematic comparison of the SE535 Bronze I received against both the Grado PS500 and the HiFiMAN HE-500 ("The Battle of the 500s").

I was amazed to find that the SE535 came out on top based on the evaluation criteria I found important.  Only concern (and it is a concern, but only one of 10 test criteria) is lack of palpable bass.

(Rank ordering in 3-way comparison:  best is "3", worst is "1"). FiiO E12 amp used.

I would be curious to see a closer comparison to say, the Westone 4r and the UE900 or other universal fit IEMs. I don't think they'd be the top top (depending on taste), but I really love what I perceive to be their stellar balance.

With the Shure SE535 being my best headphone, with only the problem of a bit light in bass, I've started looking at the Shure SE846 (four not three drivers), which frequency response curves show bringing the bass up 8-10 dB while maintaining the rest of the frequency response

Apparently, like with the SE535, the SE846 has various colors of "filters" that one can insert.  At least on the SE535, its a destructive act, ruining the one that came in there, so I haven't done it.

In these plots, I think it is the "white" filter (green line) that is the "normal" original SE 846 response.  Orange curve goes with the SE 535.

I tried to remove the filters of my SE535 and succeeded to do that without any destruction to the them ...listened to them without the filters for a day....then I put them again as I liked the sound with them more than without .

Any way it was a test for sake of curiosity ....now some filters are waiting to be bought :)

You are braver than I!  Maybe if I decide to get the SE846s and these SE535s become my SECOND pair, I might try it.

How do you find the SE846 compares to the SE535s?  Appreciably more bass?  Even better sound throughout?  Thanks!

I wish I was in a place financially where $500 headphones were basically junkers I could break.

That said, did you recable the 535? Because that stiff plastic monstrosity would be the opposite of convenient during any kind of exercise.
