It's to protect myself and others from my gear. To steal a phrase from @Monsterzero , some of my gear slams with malicious intent. Just kidding. My kit lives in my office, so I built a locking rack to discourage sticky-fingered visitors and cleaning staff.

Thanks! The top shelf is a double layer, connected by hinges in the back. The top layer locks to the layer below it with a cam lock. I can unlock it, swing it up, and then pull the non-threaded metal bars out through holes in the bottom layer.
