+1 ... I hate to say it, but I am in this camp now, as well. I am using my HD-650s less and less, though they are still the king for vocals and warm/classic guitar rock.

Same here.  I check the 650's now and then but don't stick with them any more.  Recently tried the Oppo PM-1's in my system and prefer the 700's quite a bit.  I have to admit though that I just got a pair of Grado PS500e's that are sounding fantastic.

I was considering checking them out awhile back to have another pair of phones on hand...but you sort of talked me out of them..maybe I misunderstood your original reply?

I had the PS500e for a while.  Not much of a Grado fan anymore but for a Grado it is relatively smooth.  IMO any of the good Sennheisers are in another league compared to Grados.  The PS500e was a lot easier to listen to than the RS1e which I auditioned at the same time. The RS1e had an incredibly weird sounding midrange, very painful.

Yes, sorry, the PS500's I originally had were not the "e" version.  This new pair is much better sounding.  The RS-1's I mentioned in the earlier post were the "e" version and I'll stand by my statement that they were pretty bad sounding.

Mind if I prod a little further? I've read a bunch but the 700 always seems like the forgotten stepchild of the HDXXX family, like people either choose between the 600 and 650 or bounce all the way up to the 800.

So what's the bonus over the 650? My assuming is greater detail and clarity, the freq curve seems similar up until the high end where the 700s boost a bit more. Harder to drive? Easier?

Easier to drive. 150 vs 600/650 300.
But don't use a otl amp seems to only be good for high impedance headphones
Wa6 or ember when it come to tube amps are great with 700 and lots of solid state stuff. Good prices audio gd 15 is a great match.

Hmmmm, weird...I have heard they are wonderful with an otl amp.

150 Ohm cans are not low impedance cans.

If you can keep both they make great complimentary headphones IMO.  I'm one that keeps many headphone and enjoy their sonic differences and don't say that any headphone is better sounding than another.
The HD-700 is easier to drive than HD-600/650/800.  IMO they sound best with Ember.

Maybe they would, I've had lots different, give it a try and let us/me know
As for low impedance no, but reasonably lower than 600/650

Well, I do not own the HD700 .... I am just thinking of maybe adding it, after I get my OTL amp, I do not have the otl yet either, it is in the process of being made.

I can confirm: OTL + HD-700 = sonic bliss (really smooths out the "treble spike" folks seem to complain about).

Just wanted to confirm too that an OTL amp works wonders with the HD700 : I had a solid state class A amp (nuforce ha200) on which listening to the HD700 was literally painful due to the aforementioned trebles. My Crack smoothed that edge and added some nicely rounded basses which made me love these cans and switch from my trusty HD600.

Connected my HD700 directly to PS4 remote yesterday. Wow, these are so good for gaming. I gamed straight for 6 hours without removing/adjusting headphones once. I had to push the volume to 100%, but they sounded very good for gaming. Didn't bother with Music though, I will try to stream spotify in the background today.

Thanks...I was thinking this should be a wonderful combo

I am pretty sure gibosi uses the HD700 with his Glenn OTL.....and he told me it was wonderful....at least I think he said he has the HD700
