Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

Just FYI for others, I'm currently trying the software route as well, i.e. JRiver Media center, as opposed to ITunes...status pending evaluation.  Just trying all viable options, as others have probably already suggested.

Peace and blessings,

Lord help me I'm thinking of bouncing up from the 650s to these. It seems like they've got the warmth but extra detail up top, and reviews say they retain the 800s' spatial imaging and clarity (to an extent).

My main question: will I be losing mids here?

You'll be missing FORWARD mids. The mids are still there just not as dominant as in the HD650. The clarity of the HD700 won't leave you wanting the HD650 back, promise.

No mids lost for me. Enjoy my 700 more than the 650s but that me.

I may think about adding the HD700 to my cans, after I get my new OTL amp.

Maybe it can find a place in my rotation, who knows.

Mind if I prod a little further? I've read a bunch but the 700 always seems like the forgotten stepchild of the HDXXX family, like people either choose between the 600 and 650 or bounce all the way up to the 800.

So what's the bonus over the 650? My assuming is greater detail and clarity, the freq curve seems similar up until the high end where the 700s boost a bit more. Harder to drive? Easier?

l tried the 650s recently. Put them on and instantly l realised it was a completely different HP than the 700, the former being warmer whereas the latter would be brighter. l don't have to tell you about the marked treble presence of the 700... l still believe the 700 to be more hi-fi than the 650. l think these 2 HPs could live together very well (as l consider them very different)...

In general (remember l don't know the 650 beyond a short test), the bonus would be an instant sense of higher clarity, bigger soundstage/separation, less coloured sound, faster. (l have no time to think of it now, gotta 'hit the gym').

The reviews and feedback on these are all over the place. The egg had them for 499.99 is there anything better at this price? With such different views on the 700 has Senn made a revision?

I think one reason the views are all over the place is that when the 700's first came out a couple influential "gurus" pronounced them bad sounding so those opinions are quoted over and over (those comments kept me away for years). But if you listen to them with an open mind and trust your own ears you may find they are really great sounding phones.

Easier to drive. 150 vs 600/650 300.
But don't use a otl amp seems to only be good for high impedance headphones
Wa6 or ember when it come to tube amps are great with 700 and lots of solid state stuff. Good prices audio gd 15 is a great match.

Can’t speak for the 650s but my 580\600s just sounded technologically dated, the HD700s were/are a breath of fresh air, IMHO sound staging, speed, dynamics, better extension at both ends of the spectrum and clarity is greatly improved over the former...Sennheiser’s R&D putting in a lot of effort into successfully integrating the new driver, baffle and ear cup design…not to mention the comfort.
Nothing wrong with the HD600 series…but having lived both for 6 months running balanced off a Bryston BHA-1 the 700s eventually won over as my preferred can with all genres of music, also later picked up the HD800s (too analytical) and AKG K712s (less focused)….those are also gone..

But like always it still comes down to personal preferences…mine just happen to favor the HD700s.

+1 ... I hate to say it, but I am in this camp now, as well. I am using my HD-650s less and less, though they are still the king for vocals and warm/classic guitar rock.
