Hm. I might buy some new pads then. The pads that came with it were very flat so I stuffed some padding in there. Maybe that's causing them to be darker than usual?

Well you'll have to elaborate on what exactly is recessed on your pair. "Treble" is way too big of a range of frequencies which I'm 100% certain are not all recessed no matter how bad of shape the pair is in.

K701/K145/K50 here.

Still looking for a pair of K340s and I'd love to get a good earful from a K1000 on a decent amp.

Also still looking for a pair of earpads for the K145s.

Well like the high-hat hits aren't really that 'sparkly' on the K270 Playbacks, compared to the HD580's... Not sure how to describe it. They're kinda less energetic.

Edit: Hmm... With the velour pads I have (not made for the AKG's, but they're similar I think) the treble is made much more energetic and bright and the mids also sound much better, but they're made to sound very 'thin' and the bass is completely removed. These pads are quite a bit thicker than the leathers, so maybe if I had something in between the two they might sound perfect.

. . . and I still have--and immensely enjoy--the K501. : )

K701 + Darkvoice 336SE: the band is playing in front of me
K501 + Darkvoice 336SE: oh, I'm in the concert hall!

K701s arrived this morning - at the office - now I will certainly NEVER get anything done today; good thing I own the place!

I think they sound great - out of the box through a portable RADIO - when my bithead arrives, and I can settle down with my Macbook and check them out with some decent source material

people say there is no bass - in my opinion, if there were more bass they would be useless for listening to anything other than modern pop music - very solid and tight in the bass department

AKG K701s here as well. After 400 hours they are pure heaven, just out of a half decent desktop amp & dac

I have an AKG 271S and a pair of AKG 301's on their way to me (ebay).
Someday I may move up to AKG 601's or 701's (most likely the latter), but I'm in no rush. I'm just enjoying what I have now.

I'm an ex-member of the team as I sold all my AKGs (the pair of broken silver K141 I have left does not count towards membership), but I'm temporarily joining again as a pair of K340 just dropped into my lap. It turns out my boss is an audiophile, and has a pair of (ugh) HD650 and two pairs of K340, one of which he bought new a long time ago and he just loaned to me for a month or so.

.....I have a question. How K501 and K340 can be a upgrade from K701?

Well, I will probably answer this question by myself soon, but just for advance.
