Review: Fischer Audio FA-003 - a neutral champ!
May 20, 2012 at 2:25 PM Post #2,431 of 3,047
Edit: went to jaycar down the road from me and bought a pair. 7 day refund policy, so what the hell.   Not to my taste. I the clamping force was incredible! Quite harsh and unforgiving compared to my ath-m50s. Isolation not that great either. I was hoping for something I could use on a plane. Quite detailed though, but not quite warm enough for me.   While the carry case is nice, the m50s can fold so you can chuck them in a pouch.   Needless to say, they'll be going back tomorrow.

Clamping can be fixed by putting some books to stretch the headband for a few days. Isolation is improved after the headband curves more to match your head top, but there's still minimal sound leakage. Kill 2 birds in one shot by burning them as well. These headphones are completely different in sound sig as the m50s. These are neutral/balanced vs. the warmer m50. These also have larger soundstage and are more detailed-oriented than the more close+fun sounding m50s. These won't work if you like how the m50 sound.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but how good is the isolation of outside sounds? Could you use them on an aeroplane for instance? They look alot like industrial earmuffs!

I would say that isolation is reasonable but according to the innerfidelity chart some frequences in the upper bass are actually amplified. They leak very little

Does that include your own custom label?  If it is OEM, you would need to add your own box and custom logo.  This shows the markup of headphones

Jude could get a custom HeadFi logo on a batch....

I'm in the market for some closed headphones. Are there any under $200 that beat these by $150?

With some work the T50rps can sound just about however you would like them to sound.  If you like neutral it will be a LOT more work.  I picked a pair of JayCar's up just to hear what a more neutral headphone sounds like to compare to my T50rp.  At that price, I figure it's too low not to add another pair of cans to my collection.  I am sure people with more experience could recommend other options for closed headphones though.

D2000s are getting almost that cheap, I saw them not long ago for $195 + 10 for shipping.

FA003 and D2000 are near opposites sound wise

With the last D2000 revision they're closer than they were. Fostex did seem to go to some effort to make them a little more neutral, which tells me that Denon leaving was probably a bit of a surprise for them.

D2000s do have better bass extension, no surprise, but the better mid range response is a welcome change. The new D5000s I received are shockingly better than past versions I've heard. Once I get my angle pads, and damp the cups, I'm probably going to give my older D7000s to my wife.

Wait, what? New revisions to the D*** series? When did this happen?

I wonder if they fixed the screw issue.

Wow! That's intriguing. I'm assuming that's new this year? Yet, I've heard nothing about it until now.

I swear it was a rumor a year or so back that the D*** series was being discontinued. But, with how much attention they seem to get, I didn't think that would be the case. It's nice that they refined the sound a bit though, because I wasn't a fan of the serious lack of midrange in the older pairs I had. Maybe that's why there is all this talk of them being on the same level of the K550...

EDIT: Ah, just read the article. Interesting.

The Japanese are a little odd that way. They'll make a rather large change, not tell anyone, and then look astonished that anyone would ask about it. :D
