Q701 impressions thread

Picked these up for $169.95 at Amazon... along with the Beyerdynamic DT880. Completely blown away by the Q701 for the price, in fact I'd be blown away if they were $300. Love the DT880s as well, but I was expecting to like them, the Q701 were bought on a whim, almost with the feeling I was going to have to return them because they wouldn't be up to par. I had the K701 circa 2004/5 and I was unimpressed to say the least. The Q701 is another beast altogether. No I don't have an amp yet, and I suspect they will sound even better. I listen at ridiculously low volumes (apparently) compared to others, so we will see how great an improvement there is.

PS, Bought another set of Q701s just to have as a backup.... for the price... IT IS A STEAL!!!!

MODDED Littledot 1+ and Bottlehead SEX.

Heh. Interestingly enough I was going to get a Littledot 1+...

Looks like I'll enjoy my O2 for now.

The LD 1+ is good for the Q701 but IMO this Vintage PIONEER SX-3700 is much much better you can try kijiji you can get a vintage pioneer for $50 if you don't like it you can always resale.

Does anyone here know if q701 pairs well with magni modi stack? I just bought the schiit and was wondering if upgrading to q701 over my hd598 would be a upgrade at all if I now own a magni modi stack? (I plan on just giving my hd598 to a friend so the extra money buying q701 isn't much of a issue).

The Q701 is more capable but it's also different. Different sound signature, you know...
You should weight that if you really like HD598's signature.

I do like hd598s sound signature. But I just got a he400 too, so while hd598 is considered more balanced, if I have the he400 already to cover the more bassy, harder music and if I get the q701 to cover the more lighter music, I wouldn't have much need for the hd598 balance signature. And q701 do better than hd598 for the more orchestral/acoustic music I heard. Correct me if I'm wrong. Any help is appreciated!

Q701 is great with soundstage and layering, it's also very detailed and airy.
Tonally they are clearly neutralish but can be a tad too forward in the upper midrange around 2kHz (depending on the recordings of course)

With the the right recordings it's a superb headphone, there's plenty to enjoy.
With the wrong ones, it can sound nasal, thin, overly dry, shouty, you know... There's no such a thing as the perfect headphone for all recordings.

DT880 is not as capable spatially, but it has a very even frequency response (similar to HD800) so it works great with classical music.

If you are treble sensitive or normally listen to music at loud levels then something like HD600 might work better for you.

For me the Q701 does well with most of the music i listen to. This is my preferred sound signature though. For a closed headphone i use an HM5, and my favorite IEM is my RE-Zero. These all 3 sound pretty similar and this is the sound i like.

Ive never heard the HD598, but i think everyone should try the Q701 at some point. Its special and hits way above the price they go for now days.

Have a question for you, do you find the 701 sound sometimes harsh on the treble and the sound is too much "in your face" in some songs?
