Oh and before i forget, the YHD-2 is one hell of a performer. I always liked it stock and never really felt like they needed any damping. Don's YHD-2 sound quite amazing, albeit with a slightly boomy bottom end and were a couple of notches down in refinement compared to the others. They did do the strings extremely well and retain the seductive yamaha vocals. Don's tuned them a bit bottom heavy as he uses it as his 'go rig' and to compensate for noise and such while riding on the bus. And it makes one heck of a portable rig.

Gotta give them a good run-in and final tweaking before sending them off mid-week. I'm very interested in fixing up the Woofeys now. If they can better the TPs I'll be extremely happy. Glad I still have them, like the fostex T50rp, the driver is way better than the companies ever knew.

Can't believe the ortho awesomeness going on now. A renaissance of awesome tech, only now it's in a direction we all wanted. Large, open and circumaural. Welcome to the new age!

Yes! Can you hear much of a difference between Mogami and my 8-wire SPC?
I prefer the look of the 8-wire simply because there is no heat shrink or tech-flex.

I can't wait!

I'll drop you an email later this evening too.

Thanks for the hat-tipping, guys. If it hadn't been for all of you joining in and doing a helluva lot of heavy lifting, mine would still be just a tiny voice squeaking in the wilderness. Individually, we're headphone fans. Together, we approach becoming a market. At that point, things start to move, and I hope they keep moving.

I don't have my camera here at work so I'll post some pics tonight. Brians set has the newest baffle type though I don't know it makes any sonic difference it's certainly nice to work on the lathe. As to the cable, each set is slightly different so I couldn't pin anything down to a particular wire and these days I'm also using spc. It'll take a while before the color deepens. Even oiled it's still very light but time and some sun should give them a nice rich look.

In the meantime, here are some before assembly

^^ that finish is something else. Gary just looking at the 4 iterations of the TPs, it seems like your finishing has improved by leaps and bounds at every stage. The finish on the kingwoods is better than the Afzelias. Then Steve's is even better and now I think with the madrone you've taken it a further step forward. Are you ever going to stop

?

That baffle is indeed very nice looking. That too has gone through quite a few iterations. Is the baffle wood?

The baffle is a hard and rigid 3/8" engineering plastic. Cut to size on the bandsaw, lathed round with the hole. Drilled and counterunk. It also has the foam gasket that you can see on the right-hand baffle. They have come a long way in construction.

Nice smegster..you have implemented everything now that goes into making a proper baffle. That foam gasket is definitely something every headphone maker other than on the R10 i think if I remember Ari's post about it miss out on. The baffle thickness too is noticeably bigger than what is normally used in all other headphones, and going by steve's TPs they are very rigid and sound deader than the acrylic baffle on my afzelia and kingwoods..
Are you still sticking the driver to the back of the baffle using epoxy or has that changed too?

can't remember what it's exact name is, I bought a couple of different sheets to try out.

The glue is 'goop'. A rubber glue similar to the E-6000 stuff. /sets like a hard rubber, tough as old boots and gives good coupling less the brittleness of epoxy. It's probably more stable over times and, if need be, can be removed.

smily_headphones1.gif

sadly my pads stitching unraveled a bit and I need to fix them. On the bright side, I have some mem foam to play with.

Those new audeze still shining the beacon? I may see if I can get a set and put them in a closed housing as I can't use open phones any more.
