I guess the included backplate is for the ipod 5g 30GB only because it is thinner than the other two models (the 60GB and 80GB). I am tempted to do the upgrade too, but my concern is whether after the upgrade it will be running two slow on my 30GB model.

Too slow? Not sure what you are referring to. A larger drive should not effect normal performance? Sure it will take longer to browse through more files but if anything a newer drive should be faster than the old 30gb one. Seek times, read times should arguably be faster

Well, to my understanding the ipod 5g/30GB has less ram than the 60GB or 80GB. Also a forum member has confirmed to me that after he upgraded his 30GB with a 120GB Samsung HDD it was running too slow. But that Samsung HDD had a 3600RPM Spin Speed only and I am not sure that's the reason for the slowness.

Interesting to note there is another ebay seller offering the same Toshiba MK2431GAH but made in Japan.

I just bought a TOSHIBA 120GB MK1234GAL from ebay. The seller has already tested and confirmed it will work for the iPod 5g (30GB) without changing to a thicker backer. Now the waiting ......

As much as I also wanted 240GB, I came to the conclusion the 120GB may be the best bet for compatibility with my 5g given the limited info available.

What 5G iPod do you have? if its not a 80GB iPod then it can't support any SSD larger than 128 GB. Not 100% sure about the 240GB HDD

I have the ipod 5g/30GB. I believe it could be upgraded to the 240 GB HDD but it will require thicker backplate. I decided to go with the 5mm thick 120GB HDD without any other modifications required.

Could you plz give me the link to that Runcore SSD ?
Quote:
After failing to install the Runcore SSD, I began my search for an alternative. Went to taobao.com (the eBay equivalent in China) and found a 64G Sandisk SSD for RMB 380 shipped (around USD $60). I went ahead and ordered it, thinking if it didn't work, well, I could just use it as a portable drive...

The drive arrived this morning and I installed it right away. Things looked good cos the screen instructed me to connect to iTunes to restore! (With the Runcore, a big red cross was shown instead). After a while my iPC was restored. I've been listening to it for an hour and so far it's fine.

The iPC is now substantially lighter and feels faster...with the 160G HDD, there's a slight delay when you click to play a song, with the SSD it's instant. I'll do some battery tests in the coming few days.

As you can see in the attached pic, it's only half the size of a normal 1.8 SSD HD. The seller told me the Sandisk has no cache but for iPod I guess it doesn't really matter.

Hey guys, I have an old iPod 60GB video that was dropped, and the HDD sounds screwed (clicks and scratches when trying to turn on).

Doesn't boot passed the Apple logo, but other than the cosmetic damage everything else is fine as far as I can tell.

Replace HDD for a new bigger one? Or sell for parts on eBay?
