After failing to install the Runcore SSD, I began my search for an alternative. Went to taobao.com (the eBay equivalent in China) and found a 64G Sandisk SSD for RMB 380 shipped (around USD $60). I went ahead and ordered it, thinking if it didn't work, well, I could just use it as a portable drive...

The drive arrived this morning and I installed it right away. Things looked good cos the screen instructed me to connect to iTunes to restore! (With the Runcore, a big red cross was shown instead). After a while my iPC was restored. I've been listening to it for an hour and so far it's fine.

The iPC is now substantially lighter and feels faster...with the 160G HDD, there's a slight delay when you click to play a song, with the SSD it's instant. I'll do some battery tests in the coming few days.

As you can see in the attached pic, it's only half the size of a normal 1.8 SSD HD. The seller told me the Sandisk has no cache but for iPod I guess it doesn't really matter.

My 7G doesn't recognize a Runcore 32GB SSD (rated as 3.3V +/-5%) which works just fine with my iPod 5G.
I am puzzled...

EDIT: Can't even put it into disk mode

You should go with the proven supertalent ssd mentioned in this thread. I have one of them myself. Works great. Good warranty. And cheap.
However, if you have the 60GB ipod that's thicker, you're gonna have to put a spacer because the ssd is thinner, shouldn't be too difficult..

Well it's not available here in China.

I have a 30gb iPod Video (5.5G) and want to get the iMod done to it.....found on ebay a seller offering the HDD and a new battery + 240GB labelled back cover and all the other materials I would need for installation for about $140, so tempting to decide between that or a 128GB Super Talent SSD. I talked to Red Wine Audio and they said the 240 GB Super Talent drive needs the 64MB of RAM only found in 80GB iPod Videos. Anyone have any suggestions?

You can find 5.5G 80GB logic boards on eBay. Check with seller for the 64MB RAM version, and when installed correct model is confirmed by the system info shown in the iPod's sub-menu.

It's honestly not that big of a deal to me, 128 GB is enough for me as of now, and I already had a 7th gen iPod so I will always have the availability of the music I want. Getting a 64MB logic board would just add an extra bit of cost, along with the steep price of a 256 GB SSD, so while going all out would be awesome, i dont think it's necessary to commit to spending that much more on just one of the many devices I'll have available to me. That being said, i got the iPod 5.5 gen from Gamestop, so I will be trying the local gamestops for the 80gb version in the next weeks while I can still return mine and pay a small difference for the 80gb version. I had in-store credit that I used to get the 30gb iPod, so it wouldn't have cost me much if I'm able to do this

I just let my iPod Classic SSD play continuously and it did so for 48 hours before the battery (a brand new 580mA) ran out of juice, as opposed to 36 hours with a normal HDD...I must say that's pretty amazing, and well worth the effort and money.

Im trying to decide between a Super Talent 128GB SSD and a 240gb Toshiba HDD.
They would run me about the same cost but im unsure which to go with.

Is the SSD really that much better and faster? I will be running Rockbox with Flacs and MP3s, and it would be awesome to have the 240gb HDD however then i have to worry about it failing :frowning2:
(i have 2 5.5g's and both have had a hard drive fail before)

Anyone here have the 240gb HDD by chance? what do you guys thing should i go SSD or HDD?

I've been wanting to make the same decision. if you look on ebay their is a seller selling a 240 GB HDD for about $140 USD with a new backplate with 240 GB on it and all the other stuff you would need. Might help make the decision easier

I have a 7G with 240gb HDD. I don't have any issues with it at all coupled with my Fostex HP-P1. Input lag and all that is exaggerated, yes it's there but it's not a huge deal. I dunno about longevity but to be honest, I'm pretty careful with my $699 HP-P1 let alone the iPod...

Does anyone know what HDD (120gb or 160gb) works for iPod 5g (30GB) without changing the backer?
