I just bought a TOSHIBA 120GB MK1234GAL from ebay. The seller has already tested and confirmed it will work for the iPod 5g (30GB) without changing to a thicker backer. Now the waiting ......

Just want to report back I have successfully replaced the old 30GB with the 120GB HDD for my ipod video 5g. This info may help those who may be considering doing the same thing.

EDIT:  My next move is to get an ipod video with a broken hard drive so I can replace it with a 128GB SSD. It will be fun.

Looking at the specs for the 128GB Super Talent SSD, the Reliability shows 5 years for the Data Integrity. Isn't 5 yrs the normal design life for the HDD? I always believe the SSD should have a longer design life.

Is this the reason that the Super Talent SSD is less expensive?

Mine was bought in early 2010 and it seems to have disappeared from Runcore's website...

What's about this ?
64G Sandisk SSD for RMB 380 shipped
I have a broken Ipod 5.5G 80G, does the SSD work well with it ?
Thanks in advance

It 's not working on my iPod 5G...not sure about 5.5 though.

@candc07,

What is the model number (from the about screen) of your iPod 5th Gen? How is this drive holding up after extended use and do you see significant improvement in responsiveness and battery life?

Thank you, AceG

I can't imagine getting 5 years on a HDD in a portable.  In a computer, sure, but a portable just gets jarred too much.

That's 380 Chinese yuan which is around USD $60.

That explains it.

My ipod 5g still running strong since I bought it in 2005. On the other hand, all my external hard drives (sitting on desk only) all died within a period of 3 yrs after I bought.

I think it depends.

My 5G died in a little over a year.  My first 5.5G died within the warranty and was replace.  The second one was dying after 2 years when I bought a 160GB 6G when they were discontinued when the 120GB ones were introduced.  That one is still going strong.

Yeah it really depends. That's why I need to collect a few ipod 5g/5.5g so I won't be left without music when one dies.

I don't think I can live without the rockbox either. So the 5g/5.5g seem to be the best choice for now, not mentioning the wolfson chips.

When I put the 260GB drive in my 5.5G, the mother board died 2 weeks later.  It took the SSD with it.  I got a current gen classic that worked fine and put the SSD in and it's toast.

Sorry to hear that. I replaced my ipod 5g/30G with a 120GB HDD a couple wks ago. Everything is running great with the rockbox. No lag or anything abnormal.

Before the motherboard died, did you notice anything unusual (e.g. lag)?

Well the failed motherboard may not have anything to do with the 260HB HDD. It would probably still have died with the original HDD.
