Hello everybody! I'm sorry cuz my question may be a little bit off topic but can anybody please help me - can you tell me which ipods classic have the Wolfson chip on aboard? I'm looking forward to buy an ipod classic and i want only WS chip. But also i want 160 gb hdd. Does any ipod with such amount of Gb has a WS chip or 80 gb is a max with this chip?
Thank you!
P.S. Sorry for my english :)

80gb is the max for Wolfson chip, as far as I know. But the mod is very easy. You can make it a 192gb by buying a dual tarkan adaptor and intstalling 128gb and 64gb sd cards. A couple other ways to do it. But that’s a simple way. We can help.

The iPod classics (6th and 7th generation) don't have the Wolfson Chip. The best choice would be the iPod Video (5th or 5.5th generation). You can also put every 1.8" ZIF HDD or SSD into this iPod.

So as i get there is actually no ipod classic with Wolfson? The ipod that has this chip is the ipod video? I mean the ipod with the same form factor.

The naming scheme of iPods is hard to understand, but I refer to this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204217 iPod classics don't have a Wolfson chip (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfson_Microelectronics#Products) 1st to 5.5th generation (and Cowon players if you want) have it. More information here: https://audioboost.wordpress.com/20...-cirrus-logic-audio-chip-which-one-is-better/
Thank you! I finally get it :)
Yep, in the last article there is exactly my feelings about Wolfson. It sounds in 3D simply amazing!) Thats why i'm lookin' for it.

Has anyone looked into the dogfish msata SSD's in regards to 5.5 modding? They seem to be backed or at least partnered with Levono and Asus.

https://www.amazon.com/Dogfish-Msata-240GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B0754KCV6X/

0.304$/GB price point at 240GB at 3.3v.

I can't seem to find any power consumption specs on it, but seeing how I can't find any samsung 850 evo at a decent price I am considering trying it out.

My other option is a Kingston msata SSD which has a 0.677$/GB price point at 240GB 3.3v and presumably better power consumption to the 850 evo as per kingstons official specs.

The only labeling differences is that the dogfish ssd is labeled at 3.3v@1amp and the kingston is 3.3v@0.35amp as per the label.

Comparing the website spec sheets the kingston draws less than half of the samsung.

Kingston:

0.36A typical during reads, 0.12A idle

Samsung:

0.69A Average (doesn't state read or write), 0.15A idle

If we take the maximum values of the samsung drive we can see it can draw up to 1.09A (probably during writing which doesn't matter since it is plugged in while writing most of the time) so in that consideration the dogfish drive might actually be okay power consumption wise.

Anyways should I fork out for the kignston drive which is roughly 75-100$ more than the dogfish or take a chance on the dogfish. My 5.5 is currently modded with a 850mA battery.

Thanks for any input.

Does anyone have any tips for getting the msata SSD's working with the ipod 5.5 gen? I tried a 32gb msata and a 240gb msata that I had laying around and I could never get itunes to recognize it to restore the firmware.

I used my laptops msata port to format it via `mkfs.vfat -F 32 -S 2048' as most guides tell you to do before inserting it, but no matter what I do I can't get any activity out of it.

Both are 3.3v, ones labeled as 1.5Amp and the other is 1Amp.

Thanks.

Not sure about what do you really mean but I ve got three 5.5 ipods (with Wolfson Chip) One of them has a 160 GB HD. The other one , a 128 GB SDXC. Retail max. was 80GB and that´s my other one.

On which ipods have best sound quality, a classic:

FWIW I found the Wolfson based iPods to be warmer overall but the classics to be brighter and more defined detail wise.... but that's just me
I couldn´t say. I´m not an audiophile, I like how the iPods I got sound, enough for me.

But my point was not related to that. I just was saying no, Wolfson based iPods are not limited to 80 GB; that´s not accurate.
