The cheapest legit source should be this authorized dealer of Lexar in Beijing

http://dtshuma2008.taobao.com

Only 399 RMB / 66 bucks for 128GB

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=19079387814

Other than that, Komputerbay is selling one for $110 through Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Komputerbay-128GB-Professional-Compact-Extreme/dp/B008O7N0W6

It ain't getting much better unless we hunt for deals off eBay or wait for something like Black Friday etc.

Sometimes there might be some insane deals posted @ FatWallet / TechBargains etc. but they might involve rebates and such.

Heck, I might wanna take the plunge and get this Lexar 256GB for 1,500 RMB ($250 or a dollar per GB) after Chinese New Year since they're also claiming to be another authorized dealer

The question is can we order this 256GB from Taobao to UK? At £150 is a great price. I hope it will work with Mini and Video ipods.

So... I apparently have a braaaand newwww, I mean used once for 15 minutes to set it up on an old computer new, iPod Mini 4GB. It's in absolutely perfect condition. I am thinking about some mods and was wondering if it's worth the investment for it's SQ or if I should just pass.

The iPod mini sounds awesome, the SQ is great and yes go for at least 128gb CF card if you are shy. (if not go for 256gb cf card)

In the above link, my silver 128GB iPod Mini (originally an HP model) is top center, strapped to a FiiO E17 with an L9 cable.  I forget the model of CF card I put in it.  Small and sounds great!

If you do mod the Mini, there are videos on the web to show how to disassemble it.  The glue-gun trick to take off the plastic ends is key.  Any CF card will fit inside the Mini without modification.

Excuse me if this has been discussed before, but when installing a brand new CF card, do you absolutely need itunes to connect and 'recover' installing its OS?  Or is there a way to have winamp and/or rock box to be its sole sort of program?

Yes you will need the itunes (it sucks) to restore the original firmware (OF), then enable the disk mode to install the rockbox. Once the rockbox is installed, you will have the dual boots - meaning you can either boot to rockbox (by default) or to Apple's OF.

I'm pretty sure all iPod Mini's have CF cards as memory devices.

FYI: There is a document bass rolloff issue with the headphone out of some iPod Minis.  Take a look at the following:

I've used the F9 LOD from FiiO with mine, so I am pretty sure I avoid this problem.  I haven't tested it though.

It's a first gen mini... any CF card? No random requirements?

What?  I threw in a brand new CF card and battery.  Was hoping I didn't need to mess around with itunes.

Damn.  Thanks though.

Ya, as I understand, all minis seem to have CF cards as their memory device from factory.

Thanks guys.

One thing I wonder is if there is a really need/demand for bigger CF cards.

Going Lossless, I could easily fill 2TB. Uncompressed, over 4.

Everything is going cloud nowadays..

I will never, EVER go Cloud with my music. No way I could depend on it for whenever I needed it, or leave the SQ up to someone else.

Excuse me if this is a dumb question but where are you guys ordering your wellcore cards from and are they in the 256gb capacity.

pm DMinor or cmarti for details and yes it is the 256 gig capacity.  Might be a little late for chinese new year now though where everything grinds to a stop for a fortnight!
