It would be difficult to say unless we could compare the exact same ciem in the two different material...like the 4C and 4S. I personally have only have only one silicone ciem and it is my best.

the research is there already, (ear mold acoustics). Different ear mold tubeing has been tested, results compared etc etc.... The suposition  that sound is influenced by tubeing is supported.....  (a lot of the test work was done by Dr. Mead Killion, owner of Etymotic Research)

The reason the research was done on tubeing wasn't for CIEMs but for objective results for trying to fit hearing loss with hearing aids as best as possible.

Now with digitally tuned hearing aids, the reliance on ear molds, tubeing, venting etc etc is pretty much obsolete.

Either way, the principles are the same, the ground work/research has been done, and it can be found in a lot of audiology texts etc etc. CIEMs have borrowed a lot from Audiology and I think will continue to do so.

But I digress, as I'm talking about ear mold tubes, and folks are talking about Silicone v/s acrylic....

Cheers,

Wizard

If the signature of one model CIEM made with two different materials is based off of a measured standard then it goes to reason that the characteristics of tubes are not that different if the signature remains within measured tolerance, or that the tubes themselves are shaped/positioned differently, depending on the material, to produce the same signature sound.

Pure conjecture and maybe a little too bull for this thread, but I have not found a direct comparison between the silicone and acrylic models.

Kind of helps

From the way I understand things, when it comes to the C and S models, the sonic differences are probably minimal, as the tubing materials are the same, and there are no acoustic horn implementations that expose expanding compression waves to different material barriers. The only differences would be in the reflective absorption of waves within the residual canal space (silicone vs. acrylic), and the potential difference in shock absorptive properties when the shells are accidentally dropped. The only time I can envision hearing a substantive difference between an acrylic and silicone counterpart are in designs that are heavily horn-loaded, and independent from acoustic tubing (the horn portion is constructed from acrylic or silicone, rather than tubing).

When a CIEM sounds good, it will..when it doesn't, acrylic or silicone won't save it.
I think it's more about the technology and tuning rather than the material. Same applies for number of drivers. I have heard of 2 or 3 drivers sounds a lot better than 10 or 12 drivers.
K10 is the only 10 BAs CIEM I love so far.

Man stop it...you are going to force me to get a K10 and the Hugo seriously injured my pot of gold.

The K10 really stops me from purchasing a new ciem..... but not the source components.
It really scales good with better sourcing.
