As long as an AMP/DAC combo as a line out you'll be able to bypass the integrated amp. For instance, the 02+ODAC has both headphones output (amped) and line out (unamped).

so is the ODAC a good DAC? Sothen I can get the Valhalla down the line. And can the O2 power 600 ohm headphones?

Since I can't find any specs at all and it's battery-powered, I would assume the O2 can drive quite nicely 250 ohm and 300 ohm headphones but it won't perform very well with high impedance phones.

Obiovusly current-hungry phones like planar magnetic cans are out of question.


If someone could confirm my assumptions it would be much appreciated.

1)  You can always go for a standalone ODAC + standalone O2.  You can use any combination of DACs and Amps afterwards.
2)  The more you ask for suggestions, the more confused you'll get. Either get to listen to these amps/dacs, or else use the specs to make the best decision. Otherwise you'll end up getting what the majority have, it may not work out for *you*.

There are very detailed specs available, but posting the link is not allowed here. Search for "O2 Headphone Amp", and have a look at what you find at blogspot.com. The graph shown below suggests that even on battery power, the O2 should have no problems with typical 250 or 300 Ω headphones, or reasonably efficient planar magnetics like the HE-400 or LCD-2. The HE-500 might still be OK, too, but inefficient low impedance headphones will of course drain the batteries faster.

My O2 (Objective 2) can drive my DT880 600-Ohm headphones.

The O2 (Objective 2) can drive headphones up to 600-Ohms, mine does.

Using with HD650. I don't need to go beyond half a turn on the dial, its too loud already.

It is possible to add a line output in a custom build, but the JDS Labs version does not have one, as far as I know. So, if there is no line output on your build, you would have to use the headphone jack (if you have a 1x gain setting, then select that and set the volume to the maximum).
