MDR-Z1000 new Sony flagship headphones

Why must people make definitive statements in hi-fi.  Just the human factor alone is a incredibly large spectrum.  Ear shape, canal shape, drum shape, nerves and receptors and personal taste.
So many headphone brands and everyone has a different favorite.

The treble issues could go away after a break/burn in period.  Another easy fix to that is upgrading the cable to smooth out the treble.  I had great success dealing with the CD3000's treble before.  Pure speculation of course.

Rakuten is a large company http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakuten

according to the web site it will be a month before it ships and I calculate the shipping to the US will be approximately $27.00

That's a very reasonable price considering the headphone just came out and the MSRP is much higher. I am seriously considering ordering them, but I'm worried by these reports about the treble.

The one month wait is a deal breaker. We should get it in the U.S. by then.

OK I was lucky enough to spend about 10 minutes listening to the Z1000 yesterday at Yodabashi Camera in Akihabara.  I was able to connect them to my RSA P-51 Mustang (with ALO LOD and iPod Nano).  Even in low gain the Z1000 were able to be played very loudly - they are clearly quite efficient.

My only convenient immediate reference was the Beyer t50p that I have with me on my trip.

The Z1000 are quite comfortable, fairly light, and isolate fairly well.  They are not really pretty to look at, so if that is important, look elsewhere.

As best I could tell in the bits of the 5 songs I played was that the Z1000 had very clear mids, deep and powerful bass that is generally well controlled, and a treble that is just far too aggressive for a top-flight headphone.  I think the Beyer t50p has as much treble energy as I can really still enjoy, and the Z1000 definitely has more.  There was clearly extra emphasis on sibilants on Neko Case's "This Tornado Loves You".  I went back and played it on the t50p, and there is no doubt that the Z1000 emphasizes the treble to a degree that I personally find to be too much.

The rest of the Z1000's presentation seemed excellent, and better than the t50p, as best I could tell in my fairly short listening session.

I was prepared to buy a pair.  But after listening to them, I didn't, and I'm not planning to.  Too much treble for me, based on what I heard.

I had a chance to audition the new Z1000s at a headphones shop in Osaka yesterday. I was in a somewhat noisy store and was restricted to using my iPod as source and amp. There was a set of Edition 8s nearby so I could back and forth with those a bit. I probably spent close to 30 minutes with them in total. Certainly a less than ideal situation, so please take everything with a big grain of salt, but I know something is always better than nothing with these new releases, so I will share as best I can. However, these are just impressions and definitely would change if I could spend more time with them on a better rig in familiar surroundings. No doubt others will also come away with vastly different impressions as well. With that in mind…

The frame is very nice. It seems quite well built and sturdy. The pads are soft and very comfortable but did not leave a lot of room inside for big ears. I could not tell if there were leather or pleather. They do not really have a luxurious appearance- much more function oriented IMO.

I did not feel they clamped excessively at all; very light and very comfortable to wear. I felt they were slightly more comfortable than the Edition 8s.

Isolation is decent, pretty similar to the Edition 8s.

The soundstage was good for closed headphones, nothing unusual or distracting or particularly impressive. Imaging was good with nice separation between notes. The Edition 8’s seemed to be a notch or two better in these areas.

Detail was good but not quite the same level as higher end headphones I own.

Mids were clean. The highs seemed extended and smooth. For tracks I tried with known sibilance issues, they were there but not exaggerated nor muted. There was a touch more treble presence than the Edition 8s. I prefer a little more sparkle up top, but they seemed rather uncolored it that sense

Probably, I noticed the bass most of all. I was expecting a lot less, but there was plenty. It was deep and full and seemed bumped up more than many people are going to prefer. There was definitely greater bass presence than with the Edition 8s.  And I would say more that the HD800s and LCD2s. Maybe not quite to the same degree as the Denon line, but I did not have a set nearby for direct comparison. A standard test track for me is Outkast’s The Way You Move. It starts out with three progressively lower deep bass notes. Few headphones can hit all three with the necessary oomph and maintain the same levels as the notes get lower. The D7000s do it very well. The HD800s do not. The LCD2s are fairly good but not quite there IMO. The Edition 8’s were not so good for this through my iPod. The Z1000s had no problem whatsoever hitting the lowest note while maintaining the same levels all the way down. The bass was appropriately full for what was being asked. Overall, it seemed like it could be a bit tighter though, but again, all this through my iPod. It will be interesting to hear others’ takes on this as I know a bumped up bass can cause some people to go into hysterics and is probably very disappointing news for fans of the SA5000s. (Again, my word should not be the last word on this.)

In a sort of overall refinement evaluation, the Edition 8s seemed like a level above as did the JH13Pros that I was listening to prior and afterwards. I liked what I heard but did not get the sense that these were exactly sporting a quality far exceeding their price range. I was prepared to buy them but do not have much use for another set of closed headphones and just did not get excited enough to bring them home. I did not completely rule them out either though. I will try them again when I have a chance and look forward to reading what others have to say off of their home rigs.

Essentially, all of the above should be considered nothing more than a little mental chewing gum to process just until someone actually has them in their possession and can write a more informed review.

Curiosity got the best of me, and I came home with a pair today. I just couldn't get past the deep full bass that I encountered during my in-store audition last week.

I will get around to some pictures, but plenty of good ones are out there already. They come in a cardboard box that has satin inner lining but it is far from luxurious packaging. They come with two detachable cords (3m and 1.5m I think). The cord has a 1/8inch plug that screws into the left side cup and then another 1/8inch terminal on the other end. The cord is very thin and light with a soft rubber sheath. It does not seem quite on par with the rest of the build quality. There is also a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter and a carrying bag. Again, the build of the frame is excellent. Very inspiring in terms of sturdiness. I thought the cups were plastic in the store, but in fact, it appears they are black painted magnesium. Says so on the website too. Very light and quite comfortable in terms of the clamp. Still do not know if the pads are leather, but they are soft. The opening and space for your ear is pretty cramped. I suspect that may be an issue for some. I am not sure if this has been shown in any of the pictures, but there are small ports on the cups (one hole on each cup) directly under the metal part of the headband right above the 'O' in SONY.

I was thinking mid-fi when I heard them in the store with a very clean mid range and highs and a fairly prominent bass. The subtle aspects just were not obvious under the less than ideal conditions. These are very good headphones. I think the clarity is what is sticking out the most. Super clear with great separation and a very black background. There is plenty of detail to be had. Poor recordings are noticeable but not painful. These do not at all feel dry and analytical. I have been extremely engaged since putting them on and have bouncing around my music collection trying out different tracks, artists, and genres. I have been very pleased with everything I have tried. The bass is quite prominent still, but I (or they) have adjusted a bit after a couple of hours with them. It is much less noticeable than before. Still, I think it will be too much for some. Perhaps burn-in will make a difference. I have never really noticed big differences when doing that little ritual, but will give it a go. The bass runs deeeeeeep. Oh so nice. Seems bottomless without loosing any oomph on the way down. Extended on top too. Plenty of sparkle. Sibilance is present when there on the track but does not seem exaggerated. The size of the soundstage is decent but not great for my tastes, I prefer more expansive- bigger the better. I suspect many will be happy with it as is. They isolate very well and leak less than anything I have tried before- seem quite impressive in that regard.

I will listen to these exclusively for a while but eventually will do some comparisons. I did throw on my D7000s briefly though and felt the similarities far outweighed the differences. Maybe closer to the Denons than anything else, but a cleaner, less colored, more balanced version. A bit early to settle on any of that yet though.

I can say that since I have brought them home, I have had trouble taking them off. I am pretty, pretty absorbed in what I am hearing.

I have rotated amps using the Leben, Luxman and an Elekit TU882. As usual, I am feeling the Leben slightly more but thought all work well.

Different impressions, but obviously it's not too early to be  drawing hard and fast conclusions, but not too early to start stoking the fotm machine!

Thanks for taking one for the team Greg. I look forward to hearing your take after you've spent more time with them. I'm not a big fan of the D7k, but if these can pull off their attributes without some of their downsides, it may be a promising very can.

Z1000 is a interesting headphone
rolleyes.gif

Why Sony don't make mini XLR on them, like AKG did?

It's seens easy to open it, just few screws.

Z1000's metal shell maybe possible to but mini XLR in.

If mini XLR mod. easy to go, balanced mode could be fun.
