I walked into a Sony shop a few days ago, and picked up a z1000 on demo....
What surprised me was the rough gritty surface of the outer cups...
As if it's a sort of sandpaperish epoxy powered paint.
I dun remember the z1000 being that rough, my memory failing?
I tot it was a smooth texture...

Can some of u tell me the feel of your z1000cups?

Or has Sony tweaked the z1000?

The Z1000's cups are made of unpolished magnesium (well it's probably a magnesium based alloy, not pure magnesium), the texture reminds me of the of polycarbonate the make Nikon Lenses with.
So, yep, it's a little rough, I've had the Z1000 for nearly a year now.

I've got a Z1000 coming up :)  Looking very much forward to pair it with Fostex HP-P1, iQube, Lisa III, (eventually 2stepdance), Isabellina HPA (+ HM-602 also coming up). Anyone here tried out one of these combinations?

I've had mine since april, it's got the same slightly grainy surface. Still happy with it as a closed semi-portable can. Definately improves with an amp though!

y I am kicking up this fuzz about the "new" surface, is becosssss.......
i tot the "new" sandpaper z1000 sounded fabulously open and wide at the sony store.

(The reason y i sold it half a year ago, was the "hallish" presentation of my "old" z1000...

..i dun recall it being THAT rough a surface)

==================================================================

Or it could be the IPOD that made it sound so FABULOUS!!!!!???

Headphones never sound good out of an iPod, and it's just iPod heh. seriously the iPod must down sample or somthing because A/Bing my old Itouch with my cowon on the same song, same sample rate, the cowon is notocably less grainy, louder, and clearer than the iPod.

I found my iPod Touch with a LOD is a rather good source for being very versatile. I do agree without amping, the headphone out on iPods are terrible.

Unamped Z1000 has sort of "relaxed" quality, it's rather pleasant. The punchy bass came out when amped. Although I still want to try Bowers & Wilkins P5, Beyerdynamic T50 and DT1350; I can stop here with Z1000 and ZX700 to be happy with - for portable use, of course.
By the way, I tried Beyerdynamic Gel-Style Ear Cushions on those (they are too large, but they can fit.) -- OH, the bass,  I don't think I need to buy XB700 or XB1000 (still tempting for XB1000).

Interesting. I have a pair of those gel-pads lying around... I have ordered the z1000 and I'm beginning to feel a little impatient...

After putting Beyerdynamic Gel Cushions on both Z1000 and ZX700, sound became echoey, larger sound stage and mid-recess, bass basically runs amok. It's pure fun. Z1000 (with original pads) now is my music headphones, ZX700 (with Gel Cushions) is my fun headphones.
The photo is ZX700. I cut a segment of sock fitting over it for comfort.
Something else:
As I remember about XB700, XB700 is more punchy; this extra-cushioned ZX700 has plenty bass, but it does not reached the speed and impact of XB700. When one really wants hip-hop, rap headphones, it's better off spending $80 on XB700, not $40 on Gel cushions.

It's surpsingly good infact, Very cohesive and a good out-of-head sense. Oot of the closed phones that i've oned only the W5000 was better IIRC.
