Massdrop PLUS Universal IEM

Slightly considering these, but seeing the last few pages where people are looking for replacement cables is discouraging...
New cables fixed the problem supposedly.

Currently going to buy a second pair because I miss the phenomenal fit.

My experience with spiral dot ear tips mirrored Stevie's. Still a dark iem, but noticeable better in the treble.

Currently at $200, good buy at that price? Also wondering how they compare to the planamic in-ear monitors on drop.

Might as well go for the TIN HiFi P1. Although I haven't listened to that. I have seen some comparisons to the oBravo Cupid. All I'm saying is that there are better IEMs than the MDP right now at the same price.

IMO in terms of performance still a solid IEM for $200, but as always depends a lot on the type of tuning you like (i.e personally would have to add budget for an IEMatch to enjoy it). I also haven't heard latest & greatest budget stuff... FWIW I consider it a good "diminishing returns" pick (see also Ety ER2/4, Sony N3, FD01mod/FDX1).

If you don't mind could you explain the difference between these?

They all seem to serve different purposes?

What different purpose does a voltage divider serve vs an external dac?

Sorry if I added some unnecessary confusion. Someone considering buying MD+ probably shouldn't worry about it if MD+ is the sound signature they are after (just to clarify, I wouldn't really recommend buying MD+ & IEMatch combo for its own sake instead of some other IEM).

A voltage divider attenuates a signal like the analog audio from a headphone jack, IEMatch is a headphone jack adapter used to reduce hiss and allow for better volume control when using sensitive headphones with sources where those things are an issue. The sensitivity switch alters its output impedance between 1 and 2.7 ohm. The Earbuddy is basically a lower cost version for single ended sources and without the switches.

Some specific IEMs sound will alter depending on a source's output impedance- generally speaking for IEMs a <1 ohm output impedance is desirable so that the sound will not be altered. Most modern sources (phones, usb dongles, DAP etc...) meet this requirement, but sometimes increasing or decreasing output impedance (for instance with the 2.7 ohm of IEMatch) can have a subjectively desirable effect (as for my personal preference with MD+, not everyone agrees with this).

Dragonfly is a USB DAC/AMP which acts like an external soundcard, replacing your devices' onboard audio entirely. It would be an example of a modern source with low output impedance.

Did the community ever reach a consensus on these? They seem to be quite polarizing as far as sound goes, some people say they compete with TOTL iems and some say they're nothing special and even not that great. Then there's all the QC issues that are in the reviews on MD.

They were recommended to me a while back in the Xelento thread as an alternative and at their current price i was about to pick them up but that was before i read all the less than stellar opinions on the sound.

They are a great monitor, very detailed but not 3d, Soundstage isn't better than the jvc fdx1, they have 10 ohm impedance, and they barely have treble.

On the flip side, the bass is great for a BA, they are extremely comfortable, and the cable is finally fixed so you can buy a pair knowing it won't fall out your ear at random.

I use it on planes to listen to music because the jvc doesn't cut through the noise of the engine well enough, but without my radsone earstudio or a dedicated DAP with 1 ohm output impedance, the MD+ sounds like crap.

I prefer the jvc fdx1, but at $150 you might as well buy it knowing you can sell it for $150 later if you don't like.

Imo, it's worth it for the comfort only, but it will never be my only iem/headphone.

Edit: lots of typos

Been using MD+ for 2 years now. I really love it (comfort + sound) but I'm planning to upgrade soon. Any MD+ users who can recommend a good upgrade for around <$1000? I prefer same sound sig, kinda like neutral/v-shape + fun tuning. I tried QDC 5SH and it's so good but it's like an old IEM and nowadays, ThieAudio Clairvoyance/Monarch seems more tempting but can't find demo here.
