Accurate AF

I’m giving Roon’s Parametric EQ a try with @Golyatx settings from above (I was going to start with a low shelf bass boost of +6db anyway so this seemed like a good place to start). Sounds amazing so far, with one caveat. Due to DSP Roon has to do the first unfold on MQA sources but it preserves the signal so the X16 can complete the render (MQA shows as OFS on the DAC, so I’m giving up the ability to have hardware decoding and rendering by using Roon’s EQ which is one of the reasons I ended up purchasing the X16). Maybe I should have bought the RME ADI 2 DAC FS after all? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I cant help you with that, sorry! Try disable MQA at all and see what it does?
Let me know what you think about this Golyatx target curve :-)

It’s working the way it should, its part of the MQA standard. I doubt it really impacts the sound quality at all from what I read, I’m just wondering if I should have bought a different DAC altogether at this point if I’m not fully utilizing the ability of the DAC to decode and render on the chip itself (which is specific to the Gustard X16)

Your target curve is great so far, It’s definitely an improvement. Just dialed in the headroom adjustment as well. (I was still getting clipping on some albums at -6dB but -6.5dB seems to do the trick)

Thank you! 🙏

New X with leather or pleather stock pads...which one preserves or enhances the bass further ? Thanks.

Received new 2021 LCD-XC Creator edition a week ago. So far I like the sound but hey have an extremely strong foam chemical smell. The case and the headphones smell like they just came out of a chemical plant. These are leather pads but they smell like acetone. The smell is so strong that I pulled out the foam from the case and have let them air out for a week now. Also, the headphones have been out of the case for the same period of time. They still smell very strong, though the smell is less now. Very disappointed that Audeze would use such bad foam material that ruins the experience of a new headphone. Anyone else experience this?

All new headphone smell fades in a few weeks. I wouldn't get too upset about it. Just like with any other new product...

That said, the sense of smell varies from person to person. You might be more sensitive to smells, like I am.
I remember, years ago I found the smell of my new Nighthawk quite weird. After a few days though I absolutely fell in love with that smell.

Yes, but if they offered custom EQ by serial number what they could do is measure the headphone in-house and then devise an EQ for it to meet the target and then sell the user a code that they could plug into the reveal app in order to apply the filter.
We think alike - I have suggested that if they're going to charge 4 grand for the top end models, that they should also come with a suggested EQ preset based on what their HATS measures, in order to meet the Audeze house target as well, and on a per serial number basis.

I’m glad you’re in a position to try to push some of these ideas directly to them.

Honestly, I’d go as far as to say that if they’re going off of the premise that they’re able to achieve better technical performance by leaving the driver with a tuning that… isn’t neutral. Then they should give an option (even a paid add-on) to EQ by serial number in their reveal app.

I do think the Audeze cans are something special. It’s just hard to EQ blindly. I’m sure they all know that at Audeze. As for people who love Audezes without EQ… I envy them.

I just upgraded the grills of the LCD-X to the new one with the mesh behind it. The old one was full of dust and cat hair. According to audeze, acoustically there should not be any difference. However I did notice some changes. With the old grills without the mesh, if you put your hand near the grills while listening, you could immediately hear some accoustic differences. With the new one, they seem to be a bit more closed and you can not hear any difference while putting the hand near or on the grill. This may also be because the new material is still a bit thicker and the old one after use has become a bit flattened. I paid 40$ for the upgrade and installed it myself. Definitely looks nicer and helps with the dust. I keep the old grills around though just in case I want to change them back at some point. Anyone else compared it directly?

I received the 2021 revision LCD X a little over 4 weeks ago, and I have had an interesting relationship with them thus far.
Right off the bat, I loved them. Insane details and brilliant bass.
But, after using them for a week, the combination of the super-tight clamp and vacuum-causing leather pads started messing with my ears, so much so that I tried to get rid of them.
However, since then, the clamping force has reduced and I've fallen in love with the X. That bass is simply addicting, nothing like it really. I'm using Oratory's EQ setting as well.
Sounds sublime, I'll mostly hold onto them.

Do open your mouth slightly when putting on any Audeze headphones to balance ear pressure, same trick you'd use during flight take off.

From discord:

Audeze will be releasing FR graphs for the models with the new pads next week! Another fantastic example of Audeze listening to their customers.
Which discord is this? I want to know what these pads do to the 3 and the 4.
