Koss Pro DJ 100 - The Budget King
Mar 30, 2013 at 6:55 PM Post #1,742 of 2,344
I'm planning on burning these in as follows: 100+ consecutive hours at 50-65 dBA. I plugged them into my old boombox to play fm radio.

My 100's sound ok out of the box, but not great. Any other suggestions on burn in? I'd really rather not run pink noise loops or burn in at high volume.

I was looking into buying a pair of the Auray Velour Pads and saw that it is recommended to cut some holes into the pad, can anyone post a picture or direct me to a picture because I am more of a visual learner as opposed to a "read on paper and understand" kind of guy.

Thanks!

Now that I think about it, the dj100's sound a lot like the sennheiser px100's which everyone else seems to love yet which I consider to be a mediocre headphone. They both have a warm sound signature, rolled off highs and modest bass output.

The DJ's seem to have cleaner detail with less smearing, which is a strong point but there is definitely a family resemblance.

Also, the DJ's have this weird echo within the enclosure as sound bounces around within the cup. I think this might be nice if you like classical and want a sound reminiscent of a large concert hall.

For my regular rock and pop however, it just sounds weird. I am most likely returning these, unless they miraculously transform at the 50 or 100 hour burn in marks.

I just want phones that sound good immediately out of the box, without an amp and without any significant modding effort. The porta-pro's, ksc75's, and earpods all fit those criteria.

edit: and I hope the igrado's fit this set of criteria as well (but I'm willing to do the documented mods as necessary)...

The 100's are great for enthusiasts who like to try various combinations of equipment and modding, but that's just becoming more of a hassle than a hobby for me.

Anyway, this is a great thread, and I really appreciate the enthusiasm for, and information about, the 100's.

That's a reasonable aim: to have headphones that sound great without modding, amping, or burn-in. The DJ100s need amping, but I think they meet the other two criteria (in their respective price range). I think that's a good idea for a thread...

I'm tempted to list the DJ100s there, but they benefit a bit too much from different pads and amping...close, but no cigar.

I was doing some maths and came to conclusion... I think I'll go with Koss ProDJ100... Here's the thing, Koss ProDJ100 + FiiO E11 + M50s Pads = aprox 140$. For that money I was considering to go with Denon DJ DN1000, or Pioneer HDJ1500, but since I don't need these headphones for DJ ONLY (some production and casual listening are things to consider) maybe Koss is best option out of these... I know that it would be best to go with HD25s but i need to save some money for new cell phone so, maybe next time, at least I hope so... What do you think?

Edit: Well F me, I just have to go with HD25s... :xf_eek: Phone could wait few weeks... this will be dream come true, there is something about HD25s that attracts me so much, their look, their feel, sound, comfort, portability, they are just perfect for me, and I just have to cash out those small 200$... Won't mention Amperior at all, those are crazy... @_@

I'm sure you'll be happy with those (for a little while, at least). They're probably better for on the go listening. The DJ100 has a long, coiled cable which is pretty cumbersome if you're moving.

@Newphones - they do have plastic inside the cup (according to Project86's guide), which may explain some of the funky stuff you're hearing. I don't hear it in mine, but my ears have been put through the paces since I first got into music - they're not as good as they used to be. I blame this on a particularly loud Gwar show I went to in New London, CT back in 1988 or so...

Weird echo? Same here, but only with the M50 pads. It is definitely an issue...
In the end, it is a trad off:
M50 pads: DJ 100 sounds way better (treble, imaging, details) but there's the weird echo.
Regular pads: no echo but the lows and highs sound like... gas station earbuds

Does yours really have plastic cups? If so, that's just a bad sign. I saw your old pictures and they look authentic Koss headphones. Can you exchange it for a different pair or see if you can demo another pair?

Something is seriously wrong if you get uncontrolled/sloppy bass. You could even contact Koss and get another pair for free. They have a no questions asked replacement guarantee. Vocals should generally sound crystal clear unless it's a poor recording.

One suggestion is to try it with another source too and see if things improve. Lately I've been preferring Ipods to the Clip+ or Fuze by far. However my DJ100 did sound great with just the Clip+ when using M50 pads. Maybe you can see if you can test your DJ100 with someone's Iphone if you can find one.

Sometimes a LOD cable to amp sounds better, but not always.

Another idea is to try it with a desktop computer straight from the soundcard or from a receiver. If there is no change and the bass is still really bad, then you might have a defect.

Hi tdockweiler, here are some pics. By tapping with the finger, they sound like... kitchen plastic cups.
BTW, there's is a pic showing that the DT-250 pads don't really fit. I don't want to rip them by stretching too much.
Regarding the source, I don't see how I could do better:
ALAC or FLAC (and some iTunesPlus) -> foobar2000 in WASAPI event mode, 24 bits, volume at 0.00 dB, all DSPs and EQs by-passed -> ODAC -> O2 (volume knob always in the balanced zone)

Oh, and there is that DJ 100 youtube video. Although the guy is acting like the vacuum cleaner guy on the morning TV shop, he convinced me that they were machined metal cups, haha... damn salesmen...

I don't have a weird echo with the stock pads.  There is a hint of resonance and a papery sound quality, but it's not an echo.

I've read about 30 pages of this thread, i hope that's enough to make this question non-irritating.
I got my dj100 new for £35. I'd been craving them as a porta pro owner. They're sounding better than they had, maybe more due to finding the best
gadget in my home  to use them with than burn-in. But, are they really supposed to be this odd shape? I've often wondered as
there is this weird angle between cup and headband, with my seemingly average head. Looking at them i imagine they are
at risk of something snapping? I suppose it's how they clamp but i've never seen it on another set of headphones.

Thanks.

Thanks.

I haven't had it snap and I treat mine like garbage, and my friend hasn't managed to snap them either. I carry them in my backpack without any case or anything.
