I'm a bit extra here...

But heck, I have a SportaPro. Younger Brother of PortaPro.

I love it before kramer mod, but love it more, after kramer mod.

Improvement will be subjective, what Grados produce lots of sharp treble, PortaPros produce lots of low bass.

But I definitely loved my Porta-Pros, especially paired with Voyager w/ Contour. Bass Impacts has never felt so good.

Fiiophile: I wouldn't want to try tamper my babies yet, but maybe show some pics in our local forum?

Agreed - KSC75 is a better comparison to the Grado SR60. The Portapro's bass is unbeatable at this price level except perhaps by the Senn PX-100. Even then, the Portapro has a sweeter sound.

A good amp really tightens up the bass, too, and adds strength to the highs and mids.

Just got mine and I'm in cheap headphone heaven! I thought that the px100's were great for the money, but these are just insane. Awesome with acoustic music - very natural sound. Great to join the Portapro club.

Amazing thread!! I received these free with an MP3 Player around 2001 or so. It was a PBJukeBox or something like that. One of the first MP3 players with a Monster HD in it. I went looking for them the other day to test a HeadAmp I had just bought. The Pads had disintegrated and they were on their way to the trash can. I kinda looked at them as a Joke. Then I find this thread and find they have a cult following!! I think I'll hang onto them for 50 more years and wait for that call from the Smithsonian! Thanx for the info!

I have a pair of PortaPro Jr. that must be a good 10-12 years old. The original pads literally turned to dust some time ago. After letting them sit for a *long* time, I've been using them lately to listen to tunes on the computer using Grado comfies. Doesn't sound half bad. They also double as earmuffs outside.

Well I thought I'd toss my two cents in after receiving my sportapro's in the mail. Boy it's been awhile since I've had the pleasure of listening to my ksc75. (they broke a year ago). I sent them in for replacement and purchased a pair of sportapros to toy around with before I give them to my brother. Out of the box they sound better than what I remember my ksc75 sounding. Man it's a warm, inviting sound. The bass and mids are definitely there. The highs are also coming along. I'm going to burn them in over the next 2 days with pink noise and give them a real listen before I pass them along to my brother. He's definitely in for a treat lol. These will be a huge upgrade over the behind the neck headphones that came with our game boy advance..I got a feeling I'm going to put his ears in audio-heaven

When you lift the pads you'll see a black plastic on top of the membrane. Pluck it out. The goal is to remove as much of that plastic as you can, but still retain enough so you don't poke a membrane when you use (grab) the phones.

Drill some holes or use a scalpel and be creative. Sand the edges or just be sure that there's no plastic particles sticking out (in) so you don't damage the membrane when you put it all back. Put it all back.

The phones will sound better and leak more. Enjoy.
