JVC HA-FXT90 Thread

I picked these up looking for a similar level of SQ as the "critical consensus hit" GR07, only with a signature favouring musicality, imaging, and dynamics over neutrality.  In the end, I got what I was looking for.  There's a part of me that wonders what I'm missing out on, not having heard the GR07s.  But bearing in mind that the FXT90s were approximately $50 cheaper, and that many who have both sets tend to see-saw back and forth between them, I feel pretty confident with my decision.
 
That said, I'm probably different from a lot of people on this forum, in that I have no intention of trying out 40 different sets of headphones in search of some unattainable, fluctuating ideal of sonic perfection... not that there's anything wrong with that!

I went for the JVC's as the bass tempted me a little more, but as I said (and I agree with you also) the sub bass is definitely lacking a little in these (JVC's) which I am a little disappointed with.
 
But that's cool, when I can afford it again, will go for some slightly more bass orientated 'phones and keep these for acoustic, strings, jazz etc... which all sound absolutely spot on through these, can't fault the mids and highs at all.

My understanding is the GR07 has more quantity sub bass and less quanity mid bass vs FXT90, is this correct? Also, FXT90 mids are more forward vs GR07.
Does the FX700 have more quantity of sub and mid bass than FXT90?

I hope that none of my comments are coming across as I'm liking the FXt90 less and less and that the praise is wearing off. If so, it couldn't be furthest from the truth. I still like the JVC just about equally as much as I like the Vsonic. I am just point out more observations as I hear the two and compare. To say the GR07 has more bass than the FXT90 is not saying that the JVC is bass-light. That wouldn't be a true account of the FXT90. Also, I have maintained from the beginning that I liked the drums better in the GR07 (best drums I've heard in a universal), but the guitars and horns are better in the FXT90. Bot are great universal IEMs IMHO....

I think those statements are accurate for the most part. The mid bass in the FXT90 is not huge by any stretch of the imagination. As for forward mids, depends. For example, the vocals in the GR07 I find more forward than the vocals of the FXT90. Guitars, however (electric), seem more forward in the JVC than in the GR07.

As for the FX700, no comparison with either. The FX700 probably has the most quantity/quality bass of any universal IEM I've ever heard. It's bass is bananas!! This is going by memory, and some will argue here that you can't go by audio memory. I beg to differ, and I can still hear that beautiful FX700 bass. And yes there is more of a mid bass hump in the FX700 than in the FXT90....

The GR07 extends a bit deeper, but the area under the graph is clearly much larger on the JVC to my ears.

I'm editing this posto to not double post. I was reading the discussion here concerning GR07 and FXT90. I had GR07 for a few months and I really like it for some time. Unfortunately I sold it before the FXT90 arrival. I sold the GR07 basically because comparing it to other of my IEMs at that time, it was the one with the biggest flaw for me. I considered it flat, very neutral, but really lacking bass (quantity/punch, not quality) when compared to TF10. And for overall clarity, I preferred B2 over it - considering it lacks bass too. GR07 was boring for me.
 
Now I have the FXT90 and I love it's overall presentation. I like it's brilliant presentation and understand that can be a huge problem for someone who likes a TF10 kind of sound. I think the brilliance and the aggr treble are a very good thing just because this can deliver mids and bass on the same level. It makes it very dynamic sounding, not boring IEM.
 
But ok, it can be overbright sometimes, depending on what you listen to.
 
I'm still trying to find a place to chance my connector. Today I used the MG7 to go and felt missing the dynamic sound of FXT90. These two are my fav IEMs for bass, and B2 for analytical.

I'm not even trying to discount the value of the T90. However, I don't have enough cash flow (thanks a lot college) to afford both. I bought the tf10 because I thought it would blow my mind, but I prefer my slightly eq'd monoprice 8320 over it. I'm a laid back person who listens to a lot of different types music, a lot of which don't require massive energy (I might be the only person under thirty who doesn't really listen to trance or dubstep). The GR07 is versatile enough to keep up with me whenever I feel the need for higher energy. Couple it with the Zo, and I'm good.... On top of that, the 8320 is satisfactory for my away-from-gr07-time....
 
Until I start making real money and blow it all on audio...

Ditto. It's for this very reason I preferred the FXT90 to the GR07. I'm willing to bet many of us are achieving (relatively) different seals from one another, which is why some find the FXT90's bass adequate, some find it overdone, and others find it lacking. The ear anatomy must always be accounted for into the equation, and could very well result in said perceived acoustic differences. Nevertheless, in my honest opinion, saying that the FXT90 is lacking with regards to it's low end, well, as eric said: 'To say the GR07 has more bass than the FXT90 is not saying that the JVC is bass-light. That wouldn't be a true account of the FXT90.'

Agreed with the above that the JVC has similar bass quantity to GR07 and loads more than CK10/DBA. It's a wonderful balance IMO that is present and impactful but doesn't negatively affect the other frequencies. Also I really have to share this track as one of the best piano/strings/drums test tracks I've come across. It's quite useful in concisely comparing how different iems portray these instruments.

I know I'm a trance & progressive buff, but when I'm not listening to trance, I listen to anything and everything, including various international music I don't understand a word of. But, music knows no bounds of course. Thank you for introducing me to yet another sensational artist to add to my playlist.

Have to agree with you. I have tried Sony hybrid, comply, UE, Audio Technica, Sennheiser, stock tips and ended with Monster hybrid foam tips. Different tips differs in insertion depth and seal which affects what we hear from the phones. IMO, the tips which comes with my ATH CKS90 have the most sub bass while the Monster hybrid foam provide mid bass and sub bass in equal amount. This are my own observation and YMMV.

ive been burning mine in... hoping it would get better. i was rather disappointed when i got them as they sounded pretty ordinary with no bass.  not sure how many hours are on them... not too much as i spend most of my time with my fx700 but they are coming around.  the bass is there and is of good quality but of course no where near the ie8 or fx700 which have been my last two iems.  seems a little mid focused, clarity is good, dynamic, good overall. still using the stock silicon tip. minor driver flex on the right but i find it only happens when i kinda push the monitor in. when i twist and insert, its not there or its very minimal.

Glad you guys liked the track. Dynamics seem to do better with that kind of music. Listening to it again with the A1 though shows how well it does against even dynamics in maintaining realistic timbre. The instruments sound real.

Coming from the ie8 and FX700 the FXT90 will seem bass light but keep in mind that those two iems have more bass than a large majority of iems. FXT90 sits somewhat in the middle, maybe even more than average imo. Listen to the FXT's for a while and the other two will likely sound bloated. Coming from the CK10 the FX700s sounded like muddy bass cannons for about a week.
