I've had about a week of on and off listening with the Noire X. It very much has that Aeon Closed sound signature from memory but the sub-bass performance sounds much better vs memory and looking through notes from my old Closed RT and Aeon 2 Noire. I always liked the slightly brighter upper-mid/treble performance of the older units but I always wanted a little more bass thump. This set sounds like it's lacking a little mid bass thickness but it makes for a super resolving for the price and gives enough sub-bass thump to make me happy. I quite like this sound signature and I have high optimism that these new pads will last and won't show the pad rolling issue after a few months of use. I surprisingly like the auto adjusting headband as well. I wish it was a little tighter but it's fine overall.

Great job to the team and keep up the good work @mrspeakers! I look forward to writing up a review on these once I finish getting our new home and my new audio hobby room setup!

Thanks! Cool that you go to the length of keeping listening notes to refer back to! Great idea...

@mrspeakers - I am very happy with my Noire X - Thanks

Now we just need an open-back "version" of Noire that it easy to drive :ok_hand: Or a new version of Expanse - max 2.000$ that is easy to drive.

Looking forward to that

The Xs seem like a really interesting proposition, but what about replacement pads?

As someone who’s had the ‘fun’ of sorting decent replacement pads for Oppo PM3s, which in all other respects remain outstanding headphones, I’m a bit hesitant about investing considerably more in a headphones which may suffer from pad flake issues (known as ‘black dandruff’ among Oppo owners) in a couple of years.

From what I’ve read the Xs’ pads don’t even come off. If right, that seems a bit of a backwards step in design terms as the old Noire pads could be removed as I recall.

Not sure where you got the idea anything changed? We use the same tech we always have, the pads are simply taped down. They can easily be removed and replaced, so no worries there!

What we did change was to rework the pads to prevent some of the issues with foam rolling that reduced the life of the original pads, the new pads will last a lot longer.

Why? To my ears NX has better soundstage than most of open backs.
I don't miss open backs with Noire X. At all.😊

To me it's amazing that they made closed back which sounds like open back. And has ANC-like silence from world outside.
And NX sounds amazing to my ears.
Bargain, i might say.

You are right :-) Almost

In spring and summer time an open back gives more air at your ears - less heat

Looks like the pad issue has already been addressed:

Thank you, DCA. I read earlier in the thread that the pads weren’t removable and replaceable. But I’m delighted to be wrong. The last reason not to buy a Noire X is now gone.

Was so enthralled with the sound of the Noire X at CanJam that I decided to buy two (for his and hers listening). It was between me being selfish and buying a single E3 for myself, or buying two Noire X's for me and the wife. After hearing the sound of both, I was happy to "settle" on two Noire X's, lol.

Just had wonderful two hour session with Nx going through some favorite albums and tracks. Haven't listened to Sarah Jarosz in a minute but man, the album was sounding fantastic on Nx. Her voice comes across with a little raspy-ness when she gets into the upper register and belts out the lyrics it's just impressive. The double bass plucks are deep and resonate and really show off what the Nx can do on the low end. Guitar and violin are accurate and natural. Lot's of space between the instruments to be able to enjoy them distinctly without anything getting hazed over. Great stuff!

I’ve replaced a few set of pads on my old Aeon RT and the aeon 2 Noire and I have to agree it’s pretty easy to replace.

Cross-post from the Watercooler thread-
Impressions of the DCA Noire X
A big THANKS to @goldwerger, @Audio46 and Dan Clark Audio for making this possible.

A little history... Back in 2014, I thought it would be a good idea to open an online-only headphone and personal audio shop, attempting to turn my hobby into a business. There wasn't nearly the competition in the space as there is now, and if I had had a LOT more capital to build it up, I may have succeeded. However, I did not. That said, my first step was to attend CanJam NYC and ask brands that appealed to me if I could sell their wares online. @mrspeakers himself, Dan Clark was very kind to me and agreed almost immediately to let me become a dealer, selling the awesome Mad Dog, Alpha Dog and then the original Ether. I loved watching people light up when they auditioned his headphones at the pop-up shops I would hold in NYC. MrSpeakers was my favorite of the brands I sold, and Dan was a great guy to work with. Well, I finally admitted defeat and closed up shop in 2020, and the only DCA headphone still in my possession is the original Aeon (closed) - so I was eager to hear how this newest generation of that headphone sounds.

Lucky thing I still have that Aeon, too, because the Tour Noire X comes only with XLR and 4.4 cables, and I don't have an amp that takes either! So my listening is with my inferior original Aeon cable, which is 3.5 with a 6.33 adapter. At least my comparisons are apples-to-apples, all with that cable from the Icon Audio HP8 Signature.

I had not listened to the Aeon in quite a while, but I started with the Noire X, and wow - the sound was crystal clear with great extension at both ends. I had listened to the DCA E3 ($2000) at CanJam Dallas last year, and was mighty impressed, but without an E3 here to compare, my audio memory is telling me that the Noire comes closer than it has a right to at its $1000 price. I find it quite interesting that DCA has done such a fine job with these two closed-back models, but has not come out with open-back equivalents. Must be something to do with the driver and damping technologies he is employing that don't lend themselves as well to open backs. (Purely speculation on my part.)

After getting acquainted with the Noire X, I am pleased to report that all the online hype and praise is well deserved. I would like to say that this is the best $1000 closed-back headphone I have ever heard, BUT... I hardly ever listen to closed-backs, so my experience is fairly limited in that regard. If I had been blindfolded in a quiet room, I would not have guessed that these are closed, and that is high praise. A few years back, I kind of gave up on planars as well, finding that I was enjoying dynamic drivers more. The new tech being employed here (and in the E3) have me changing my mind a bit.

It is in comparing the NX to the (OG) Aeon that the changes in the "planar sound" are evident. I was never good at finding the words to describe why dynamics suited my preferences better than planars, but the latter to my ears always had a sort of glare in the upper midrange/lower treble that put me off. My old Aeon has it, but listening on an OTC tube amp with impedance switch now (which I had not done), it is somewhat mitigated, and the Aeon surprised me with how good it sounded. Although it is clearly a couple rungs below the NX in every regard - bass quality and quantity, midrange clarity and treble clarity and extension - all told, in my wildly unscientific estimation, I'll call the NX 25% "better." The self adjusting headband and new-style ear pads are comfortable, but I did find myself having to nudge them back up my head a little every now and then - whereas the old style needed to be manually adjusted, but stayed put very well.

The NX is an easy recommendation to anyone looking in this price range for a closed-back. And if I have swayed you, try to buy them at Audio 46 (no affiliation here, just gratitude for lending this pair to Eyal for the Watercooler Tour).

For anyone with a weird shaped head like myself that was having issues with the self adjusting strap not holding the cups in place, I found a great solution on Etsy under the “MaximIT” store.

This strap is very soft and flexible with breathable holes. It feels a bit lighter than the stock Noire X strap and forms to my head nicely. The cups now stay in place on my head due to its fixed position and don’t sag down after 10-15 minutes of use. To my eye aesthetically, it looks like it was made for the Noire X!

Max is based in Canada and shipped my order the same day of purchase. He immediately messaged me with instructions on how to install the strap (very easy to do by removing 2 screws). I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who loves the sound of the Noire X but was struggling with its comfort over time. It also works for the E3 should you be suffering from the same issue there.

I almost pulled the trigger on this a month ago but decided to wait. Can I ask what the material is? Is it that hard plastic from 3d printers or softer?
