If you could only own ONE headphone forever, it would be _____?

My experience of different phones (certainly high end) is probably quite limited compared to many here, but I'd say the HD650.

Maybe something out there I haven't heard yet beats them, but I do know I would be perfectly happy listening to these for the rest of my life!

Grado RS-1, versatile and lush. It works great as a portable or at home. Also, it has this very detailed, colored but pleasant sound that I don't see getting tired of.

Stax O2. Beyond their usually listed virtues, I find them mysteriously forgiving of substandard recordings. They seem to bring out the best from whatever I feed them. The good dynamics I have heard (not many I admit) were merciless with any faults.

Stax SR-007 mk1... Out of them all, it would be the one that I would have to keep.

my grado SR125s

although I love my D2000s, I like the versatility of the SR125s

It also helps that I replaced the headband and "modded" the comfy pads it came with.

Awfully hard choice between the K-1000 and the HD-800. If I chose tonight, it'd probably be the K-1000 because incredible soundstage and because it can be run off a variety of interesting DHT amps. But if you asked me tomorrow, I might pick the HD-800.

The O2 Mk. 1 and HP-2 are also very, very good. If I somehow got stuck owning either as my one and only, I wouldn't be the least bit upset.

Sorry?

I may not write it as clear as it is in my head, but you missed the important part of my point in your quote...

because it can be so very revealing it can easily show you any fault in the recording, to the point that some music is just unlistenable. This ability has a positive side too: because of this very revealing nature it can make very lifelike sounds where it does not sound like it's standing in between you and the music.
