Hifiman RE272: Review
Nov 8, 2011 at 3:14 AM Post #167 of 273
Another note - I needed to tune down the crossfeed or the soundstage collapses near the center. This means they actually have better soundstaging out of the box than the other IEMs I've tried, especially depth.

Oh, and they don't have mere microdetailing. They have nanodetailing - and this doesn't subtract, only adds, to my enjoyment of the music.
I've just tested these on a bunch of personal live recordings. (Made by a friend sound engineer, opera and classical; I've listened to the same performances live.) They are better than pixel perfect - they're just perfect.
(after applying the abovementioned eq and tuning down the crossfeed to properly set sound imaging - how could I not notice that mistake earlier escapes me...)

what eq'ing would you recommend with the fake sony hybrid medium tips ?

i have a cowon J3 and usually use them on the BBE/BB MP mode.

Thanx,

With the Senn olives, the response is within 6 dB of ideal in range 60 Hz - 16 kHz. That's a great result!
(reference level at 500 Hz, sine tone equalization; could be a bit simplified still)
The only other IEM that came close is Westone 4, which has an uncorrectable bass flaw (mediocre detailing, ringy bass) and is less extended upwards.

Final equalization (for the olives) goes below:

Fun fact: if the crossfeed is disabled, this equalization gives perfect binaural setup, all line stringed on a line going right through the head - but gives excellent results with the few binaural recordings I have.

This equalization is best done by ear, as everybody has slightly different fit and very different ear canal shape - what sounds flat to me probably won't sound flat to you.

Feel free to read the thread mentioned in my signature instead.

Can someone compare RE272 with Phiaton PS200 ?

I like my PS200 (with TX100 foam tips) for its excellent highs, warm mids and beautiful soundstage. TX100 tips reduce harshness of treble in these earphones with some recordings. I even like more than my Triplefi10's, Pro Coppers with some songs. It sounds pleasant to me. Bass feels sufficient to my taste. Definitely I recommend to anyone who likes sparkling treble with good mids and bass.

Can someone compare the 272 to the 262 please?  I just purchased the 262, and I had the 272 for about a month....

To my understanding 262 (i had it) and 272 are different...262 is warm, mid centric with highs definitely not as crisp as say Coppers or triplefi's.
272 is more crisp and detailed (you have to tell me as you own it).

I thought Joker did a pretty fine job of comparing the two, but what the hell do I know ? I'm going back to my case to enjoy all those less-than-crisp highs with my 262s.

Phiaton PS200 is an entirely different kind of sound signature - they're warm and smooth, with boosted "presence" range - too much 8k sparkle, sounding metallic and fake. It's also lacking in extension on both fronts, ending at 30 Hz and 17kHz, lacking a lot in bass detailing. MTPC are warm, with slightly boosted mids and muffled highs, all in all decent, but RE272 runs circles around these, especially when corrected.
RE272 are sharp (but not excessively so) and colder, but a bit bass-thin. Unlike the two mentioned, it has extension both ways.
Note: I didn't have much experience with these two, only a cursory listen with standard included tips.

Foams do kill high extension for me, they tend to collapse in my small, tapering ear canal causing an obstruction - unless trimmed to be short, or being Comply P cone shape - for 1mm nozzle IEMs.

To add to my review - without equalization, RE272 sounds slightly 2D (less depth), a bit too forward as well as slightly bass thin. Still, the best out of box experience yet, aside from horrible included tips.

Got another suprise yesterday. Seems that neither FiiO E7, Reltek Intel HDA nor Presonus FP10 can drive RE272 to full quality.

The suprise is that old Terratec Aureon 7.1 that was gathering dust in an old rig can. It has a high power (also high current capacity) output, optional gain 4 amp (not used, too loud and adds noise), very good SNR and other measurements. Semi-pro gear all in all.
The improvement is in even flatter, smoother sound without eq (didn't have time to eq there) and far less bass rolloff.

So, count these as very current-hungry, liking a strong amp for best results.

Long time lurker, first time poster.  So, take it for what it's worth.  I was struggling trying to get a good comparison between the two and nothing I found on here was satisfying.  I owned the re262 for about 6 months before someone broke into my car and stole them!  I decided to go for the 272 this time.

First thing that I noticed between the two was that for some reason the 272 fit better.  With my 262s, I noticed immediately that the right side had slightly uneven sound compared to the left side and I put it down to a fit issue.  With the 272s, everything fit perfectly right out of the box and sound was completely even.  Maybe the shape of my ears changed?  Who knows.  Build and comfort-wise everything is about the same.  Maybe the shell is a bit shinier and slightly gunmetal colored whereas the 262s were piano black.

Now, to compare the sound.  You guys should know I am comparing the two unamped, through both laptop and cell phone (Droid Charge which has a Wolfson DAC).  So with that in mind, I could go through and describe the sound in conventional terms.  But, I sat around one night while listening to my re272s thinking about this, and the best way for me to describe the difference is through this analogy.  The re272 is like audio porn (excuse my language), whereas the re262 is like your music making sweet love to your ears.  Now, what can that possibly mean?

With the re272, you get the transparency, clarity, and detail that the re262 might lack.  The re272s lay everything out in front of you and you get things you may otherwise miss with the 262s.  But, the re272 (in my humble opinion) lacks the intimacy, closeness, and connection that the re262 provides with its lush mids.  By comparison, the re272's mids almost sound recessed (relatively speaking) - like watching as opposed to engaging (you get the analogy by now).  With the re272, it's up to you to get engaged with your music, whereas the the 262 just gives it to you - the connection is immediate.  On some songs, it's like watching a singer up on stage from a bit away with the re272, to having the singer front and center at a small venue or (in some cases) even singing to you from on your lap with the re262.  This is true across many genres, from jazz, pop, rock, to rap.

Also, I think it's beating a dead horse at this point, but another difference is that the bass and sub-bass on the re262 is much better than the lacking 272.

The best musical examples (songs / singers) from my library where I hear the difference most apparently are:  Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.  Another song that gave me chills the first time I heard it on the re262 is Between Two Points - The Glitch Mob.

So, to me, I believe the price difference and cost of the 272 is justified.  It's an excellent IEM and the one that I'm stuck with at the moment.  But, I am seriously considering returning these and exchanging them back for re262s, not to mention the $100 price difference.  I would like to hear any responses from others who own both of these IEMs whether you agree or disagree.  I seriously like both of these IEMs, but I feel like the re262s are something special.

But it gets better with more powerful sources (and with a balanced source, though I've not heard it myself). Despite it's low impedance, I thought that 272 likes cleaner, powerful sources more. But then, I just had very few hours with it. If I had them now, would have tried them out of Burson HA-160 and also UHA-6S and see how it goes.

I rate RE272 above RE262 overall, but indeed 262 is a little special. It's not even my preferred signature, but RE262 seemed a bit more effortless in doing things than RE272.
