Nice!  I'll message him.  I was kind of curious how much the LCD2 pads would really help.  I've seen a couple complaints that they weren't the most comfy.  However, I'm sure just about anything is better than the HE-400 pads =).

Another thought, any idea if the new HE 560 pads are sold separately anywhere?  Lohb's solution seems similar, though probably much cheaper also.

*EDIT*
The HE-560 look to have many attachment mechanism differences, so I'd probably rule those out.

Got the FocusPad A in with the HE-400, and man does it improve comfort over the pleather and velour pads. Like, big time. Don't know how the sound has changed, as it's been quite a while since I last owned the HE-400. Just need to do my "clamp" fix and decide on a headband pad. Using the HD600 pad, but I'm not sure I'll stay with it. Need something wider on a heavy headphone.

All HiFiMAN pads are interchangeable I believe. The ones on the HE-560 are either Focus Pads or Focus A Pads. Both work on the HE-400. I have Focus As on my 400s. You can get them on Head-Direct.

Okay, this are my EQ settings after some changes:

For me the Electri-Q export function is not working, but here is the foobar fxp file.
(when you use the VST 2.4 adapter and not George Yohng Vst Wrapper, I had the impression the Adapter has a better sound):

Important:
-I use velour pads
-There are many reasons why this configurations sounds good for me, but not good for you. Better use the EQ tutorial and optimize the settings for yourself.

I think Michael Jackson Thriller is a good example, the song sounds much better with EQ. (or Steven Wilson)

Hi everyone. I recently got the HE-400. And am looking to buy a portable headphone amp. I can spend at most $150.
And I can't decide if I should get the Fiio E17 or E18. I also have the HTC-One which I 'll be using for music listening.
I also have an Ipod and Sandisk Fuze that I use sometime. I care more about SQ than function. So if someone can point me to the right direction as to get the E17 or E18. Thanks in advance.

Assuming you don't need the DAC--iPod, Fuze, and HTC won't benefit from the DAC, have you considered looking at Fiio's e11k and e12?

The e11k at $58 USD is a steal and compact. The e12 is $130 USD and larger form factor, but goes on sale from time to time at $99 USD. The e12 is the stronger AMP of the two, but both should be fine with the HE-400 cans.

Helpful?

For portable, I like the E17 - the HE400 responds very, very well to it's bass and treble boosts. For desktop, the Aune T1 has been my favorite option thus far. The soundstage just comes alive. Great synergy.

Im looking to upgrade from my DT770s to the HE400s and I heard some stuff about comfort issues. My main worry is that it will be a lot heavier than my dt770 and cause fatigue (my listening sessions are usually 2-4 hours long). Have you guys ever had problems with weight and fatigue?

I should have mention that I plane on using the dac for the laptop as well. Is the E18 better than the E17 minus the tone control?

In my experience, yes. I find the DT770 (pro version) quite light and comfy. The first time I owned the HE400, I couldn't find them comfortable. Velours pads helped but it wasn't enough. I tried for a long time, but eventually sold them. I just rebought them, but this time with Focus-A Pads and they make a lot of difference. I still need to add additional padding to the headband for me to keep them on, but doing so makes them actually comfortable to wear. Still rather heavy, but totally doable for me. So, they can be comfy, but you need different pads (Focus-A cost $40) plus some headband cushioning. Otherwise, they will not come close to the 770s in comfort.

The Cayin C5 is probably the best portable amp choice at that price. It sounds better than the Fiios.

Has anyone compared the he-400 and the DT990? How do they differ in the highs and mid range? I have heard the dt990 has better treble, is this correct?

I did an in-depth comparison here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/731125/looking-for-gaming-headphones-is-the-he-400-overkill#post_10820436

Which treble is better depends alot on your personal preferences, amp pairing and pad choices for the HE400. Overall, I would say that the HE400 would be considered the better headphone by about 90% of listeners for music. The DT990 is a great alternative if you plan on using the headphone mostly for gaming, as it is far lighter, more comfortable and has a fun v-shaped sound.
