**Hifiman HE-400 Impressions and Discussion Thread**

I think that He-400 is one of the the better headphones for listening to EDM music...really awesome with a right Equalization

I'd have to agree with you, the combination of the fantastic bass and crisp highs (along with detailed mids) make the HE-400 shine when listening to EDM.

The music I like least with my HE-400 is metal, mainly stuff like that. I feel the HD600 does a much better job and its not bad with EDM either, its just the HE-400 sounds like it was made for electronic music.

I use Beyerdynamic 990V pads (#926.679) But this is in Poland, not sure if they are named exactly the same way in other countries.

Those pads are the best pads, by far, that I have ever tried in any headphone (I tried around 8 cheaper headphones and about 4 mid priced headphones, both velour and plether. I strongly favour velour due to sweat issues, as well as heat build up problems).

Crap, I totally forgot!

These Pads do have a flaw: They are so soft that the pressure from the headphone on your head will squash them rather thin.
This means that there is a chance your ears might touche the driver if the are generously sized and/or angled a bit.

In my case it happens from time to time but never bothered me in the past, however i thought id mention it.

Anybody try HE-400 with Q701 pads? The fitting rings from Hifiman are the easiest thing in the world to glue to the bottom of AKG pads but I'm afraid to waste $60 pads if it sounds like ass.
Ask Thurstonx LMAO.

Sent him a PM. Angled AKG 7xx pads are some of my favorite, the potential comfort improvement with Hifiman cans would be undeniable, my only concern is how much bass I'll loose and how bright they'll sound.

Based on the HE-500 he has praised them very much. He definitely likes them.

Hey guys, i'm looking at upgrading my amp (as per this thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/709350/amp-recommendation-500-ish-paired-with-magplanars-he400-500-560s-mad-dog-iems). Though I did just buy the class A biasing mod for the MStage, so maybe that will help open it up a bit.

Wondering if anyone had any comments on it?

Leaning towards a solid state amp, maybe something like the Burson Soloist SL or Audio GD SA31SE? Anyone had any experiences with these and the HE400/500/MDs?

Thanks all :)

I have an M-stage as well, stock opamps though. I was considering going for an Audio GD amp at some point as a replacement, but many people have mentioned how the HE-400 doesn't scale that much after a certain point so I just let it slide. The M-stage probably gets around 90-95% out of the HE-400 anyway.

Got a used pair of these a couple of weeks ago. I have had many headphones over the years (the original HE-5 included) and think these are excellent. Just the right amount of bass and way more importantly, quality bass that is tight and deep. I read accounts of sibilance but find that 95% of my recordings do not exhibit this (the original HE-5 did this more from memory). Maybe older Lyle Lovett which tend to be bright recordings are a touch hard sounding. The real test for me is Cara Dillon recordings, she can show sibilance in most of her recordings but it is very mild with the HE-400. Good recordings are excellent, bad recording sound accordingly- i.e. this is not a forgiving headphone.
I am running these with my own cable (Mogami with 4-pin XLR termination- pair I bought had no cable) into a Audio-gd Master-5/ NFB-1P DAC. I also feel they work really well with my NFB-12 and NFB-16.
Very resolving and engaging and a real keeper.

PS- great with movies too.
