On the low end, the he400 will sound quite good from:

1. Fiio e17

2. o2/odac

3. magni/modi Schitt stack

You can climb the amp/dac ladder but the improvements will be small. This headphones just amps so easily. It does sound great from the lyr, but do I hear a $500 difference? Nope...

Please help me, how much should i spend on amp+dac for He-400 without overgearing? (max 800 euro total)
any recommendations?

Something as cost effective as the Audio-GD NFB-15.32 will make these babies sing. Also, the smoothened top end of the NFB-15, will match up well with the HE-400 sizzly top end. It will feed the HE-400 around 2 watts too.

The other good alternatives with better specs would be the NFB-5.32, NFB-11.32. I personally used a Compass 2, which is a bit better and more versatile, with analog inputs, and customization.

Hmm nice but I cant really take a company with a website looking like 1995 serious.
Also I'm a bit unlucky so it would probably break and it would be a mess sending it back to china.

Thanks for the tip tho! Cheers!

Do you think those setups would be a decent upgrade from Asus xonar essence st?

Lol, so because they have terrible web design, makes their audio equipment not worth checking out? Audio-GD is VERY highly regarded here on Head-fi.

Those things are rugged as hell. I'm on my 3rd piece.

The SA-31 is a $500 amp that has 10watts at 40ohm. Yeah, that is 10watts fed to the HE-400. Kingwa makes some good ****.

FiiO 17 sounds nearly indentical to XONAR ST

Lol, most SS amps sound nearly identical to one another, IMHO. Differences are subtle more than actually noticeable.
