**Hifiman HE-400 Impressions and Discussion Thread**

Ill probably go to HE-500 a bit later as well, but ill wait for now.
Mad lust Envy, would you say that going from a E17 to a schitt valhala is a non-costeffective upgrade to make?
I am wondering if i should go for a better amp/dac now, and then move to the HE-500, or jsut get the HE-500 first (still need to test them at the store but this freaking illness is killing me).

Hi,

I would like to upgrade to the HE-500 (and I will) but for that I have to sell the HE-400 first. (I might sell my D7000 too for the LCD2 one day)
So I made a classified here : http://www.head-fi.org/t/645250/he-400-like-new

I keep hearing good things about the HE-500.  Once I get a more suitable amp, I want to get a pair to compare with the HE-400 and then just keep the one I like best.  Don't really want to afford keeping both, but I can fortunately at least get both and see if I really do prefer the HE-500. :D

Post your impressions when you get them... would love to hear another opinion of the HE-500 from a fellow HE-400 owner.

FWIR, the Valhalla is designed for high impedance headphones, which planar magnetics like the HE-400 ARE NOT. Lyr would be better for low impedance, current hungry cans.

Sure I will ! :)
I'm using the Burson Soloist (I have to do a review of that amp first). And to be honest the HE-400 sounds great out of that amp.
I can't wait to test the HE-500 with it !

Ok, lets have a look at the Lyr then (assuming i can find them here in Poland). Thx >D.

I find it strange that there is a big LCD2 ($1000) thread here on full-sized headphones subforum, but no HE500 ($700) thread. The HE500 thread over at summit-fi is barely trafficked compared to threads here. Ah well.

I'm putting out over 10watts to the HE400, and I feel its just slightly better than stuff like the Magni, E9K, E17. Yes, it's better, but they do not scale that much.
This was with a lot of level matching by ear and some android spl meters and non-expectation bias. The HE400 is pretty efficient, and just does not need a lot. People wanna justify the price for the miniscule gain, but all I saw was the HE400 sounding relatively the same with the addition of the amp signature differences.

After that first full watt, 10 watts is only adding 9-12 dB of potential output. Far more power than you would ever need!

I can't even take my O2 to max (2.5X gain) without feeling like my head will pop.

after listening to this track on he5le I had to take a deep breath as I was next to this great musician and his mighty instrument, this is the track when you can test dynamics, texture, details, transients and resolution

this is the track where you can enjoy the music and feel instrument mastery, feel free to listen to this track loud, breathtaking experience

tomorrow I will be auditioning he4 + ef5, can't wait

I prefer his Bach performance on his album The 6 Unaccompanied Cello Suites Complete to that, a lot more detail and clarity. But maybe not as much sense of open space (all the tracks on that album sound like you are sitting face-to-face to him pretty much).

what you have mentioned above is what I listened testing he5le+ef5+xa5400es a few months ago - I was shattered into pieces listening to this, tremendous performance, shocked by the realism

just found this one on youtube in HD quality so decided to post it here anyway

beautiful tracks imho

I'm thinking i should get a loaner pair of HE-400 going around.  for now, limited to U.S. addresses so shipping doesnt take forever.  each person would be responsible for shipping it to the next person on the list or purchasing it as a b-stock.  Any interest?

Well that leaves using an equalizer. I do not understand why so many people go out of their way to avoid using an equalizer though.

I'm not sure, either.  Intimidation?  Desire of a pure, untouched sound?  If one just stays on the path to try and achieve the perfect sound without any EQ, they will be on a life-long journey.
